🟢 GWEC is delighted to announce the first-ever Global Renewables Summit with our colleagues at the Global Renewables Alliance. The summit, held in New York, will drive action on the global #3xRenewables target announced at #COP28 in Dubai. In September, the Global Renewables Alliance (GRA) and Bloomberg Philanthropies, in partnership with the Government of Barbados and Kenya, the European Commission, the COP28 UAE and COP29 Azerbaijan Presidencies, the International Energy Agency (IEA), the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), Sustainable Energy for All (SEforALL), and the Center on Global Energy Policy, will host the Global Renewables Summit #GRS24. The event is also supported by the Global Renewables Alliance's founding members the Global Wind Energy Council (GWEC), Global Solar Council (GSC), International Hydropower Association (IHA), Long Duration Energy Storage Council (LDES Council), International Geothermal Association and Green Hydrogen Organisation - GH2. GRS24 will be the first-ever public-private summit where leaders from industry, government, intergovernmental organisations, NGOs, philanthropy, and COP presidencies convene to discuss the progress, opportunities, and challenges of tripling renewable energy globally by 2030, aiming to accelerate the clean energy transition. Held in New York during the 79th UN General Assembly High-Level Week in September, GRS24 is set to be the firing gun of a race to the top on the global achievement of the #3xRenewables target. “At COP28, a coalition of private sector, civil society, governments, and multilateral organisations collectively secured a global target to triple renewables by 2030. Now, it’s time for action,” said Bruce Douglas, CEO of GRA. “Renewable technologies are mature and competitive, and the industries are ready to deliver, but the right policy frameworks and implementation are now urgently required. 🌍⚡ The Global Renewables Summit is NEXT WEEK! Starting Monday, This critical gathering focused on accelerating the energy transition. Hosted by the Global Renewables Alliance and Bloomberg Philanthropies, we’ll dive into the opportunities, challenges, and solutions to unlock the full potential of renewable energy. 🌞🔋 Renewable Energy as a Market Signal: Solar and wind are more affordable than ever, with investment in renewables hitting record highs in 2023 at USD 570 billion. Despite the momentum, 2024 has seen slower growth. We must triple investments to USD 1.3 trillion/year to meet global targets. 📈 Good News: Renewables create jobs faster than fossil fuels and offer a 367% greater return on investment since 2010. Solar and wind are the cheapest energy sources globally, and a clear direction for growth exists with the tripling target. 🚨 Challenges: Policies are lagging, and finance isn’t flowing—Only 12% of the tripling target is reflected in national strategies. Developing economies are being left behind, with only 15% of clean energy investments flowing to these regions. 🌍 The Path Forward: Faster permitting, grid modernization, and supply chain resilience are essential to scale renewables. Governments must update regulatory frameworks and set ambitious, sector-specific renewable energy targets in NDCs. It’s time for decisive action. If we achieve 3x Renewables & 2x Energy Efficiency, we could cut emissions by 80%—bringing us closer to the 1.5°C goal. Let’s make it happen together! The International Energy Agency (IEA) has revealed a phenomenal 50% surge in large-scale solar and wind capacity added to global energy systems in 2023, setting an unprecedented pace for renewables growth in the last three decades. With ~510 GW of new capacity, the world is on the brink of tripling capacity by 2030, as envisioned in the Conference of the Parties 28 goals.    Solar PV steals the spotlight, contributing a staggering three-quarters of the new capacity. The IEA's Renewables 2023 report foresees continued expansion, projecting a global capacity of 7300 GW from 2023 to 2028, driven by the plummeting cost of solar PV. Encouragingly, 75% of new solar PV and onshore wind installations in 2023 offered more affordable power than existing fossil fuel facilities, a figure set to rise to over 80% by 2028.    However, challenges persist. Australia, among a handful of nations, faces growth impediments due to policy uncertainties and regulatory lag, prompting the IEA to call for urgent action. The report highlights the need for streamlined processes, enhanced system flexibility, and tackling curtailment issues.    These positive strides are embraced as a beacon of hope for a sustainable future. While challenges persist, this report highlights the transformative power of renewables.     Renewable energy is positioned to become an existential threat to the fossil fuel industry, marking a turning point in 2024.
