What does it take to design a modern multipurpose arena so it fits a complicated site plan, drives community engagement, supports a main sports tenant and, oh yeah, adheres to challenging funding models? "When the price of these buildings continued to get more and more expensive, the buildings had to take on a more multipurpose program because you really can’t justify the cost of the venues for just a single tenant," says Bill. "The problem with doing anything multipurpose is there’s an initial first cost to that. It’s not as simple. It’s not as straightforward. For a long time, owners were reluctant to spend the money to plan in flexibility and resiliency into the projects, but now they’re listening to us. They’re really doing it." Clark Contracts have been appointed to deliver the construction of a new purpose-built student accommodation development in the historic Canongate area of Edinburgh for S Harrison Developments Ltd. “The development will feature 76 studio rooms alongside amenity space, separate study rooms, a multi-media room, gym, break-out space, and cycle storage. Gensler has been awarded a $25M contract by the Dallas City Council to lead the renovation of the historic Dallas Memorial Auditorium 🏟️ This transformation will make way for the Dallas Wings to call the 9,800-seat arena their new home starting with the 2026 WNBA season. This move follows the City Council’s approval of $19M in incentives to relocate the Wings from UT-Arlington’s College Park Center. Not a criticism, but a genuine question which requires debate. At a time when the local higher education establishment has announced a downturn in student attendance resulting in job cuts, and budgetary problems. Are more Student flats required? Our city has had a swell of Student accommodation approvals recently with several large scale developments already underway. Is this a priority over permanent housing need in Dundee? When we are told that land resource is limited and regeneration is best, is a large number of student units the best use? How much income does the local authority gain from each student flat per annum? I.e. is there any council tax (or similar) and is this more lucrative than housing to the city coffers? Are there the same levvies applied to these developments as would be the case for new build housing? if not... why not? The pressure on local amenities and services caused by the population increase once these flats are occupied must surely be the same? Or is it simply the case, developers no longer make any return on housing due to the poor policies introduced over the last decade leading to potential housing land now being put to better use to generate a higher return? Interested to hear thoughts on the rapid rise of these student mega projects.

PLANNING SUCCESS. Ellis And Partners have secured permission for a 32 room (mix of single, double and studios) Student Halls of Residence in Bournemouth Town Centre (2nd one this year). On this application waste collection, cycle storage & Daylighting were all parts of the scheme initially rejected by the council. However, as per usual, our in house team were able to offer robust evidence based justifications as to why the application should ultimately be approved without any changes to the layout. The scheme retains all the ground floor retail, and other major commercial elements of the building ensuring the Town Centre remains diverse and viable.
