When it comes to freshwater-related issues at #INC4, IISD wants to see: 💧 Mitigation of plastics pollution in fresh water addressed more explicitly and comprehensively and that the resulting recommendations ensure positive impacts on both freshwater and marine systems. ⚠️ Specific measures to prevent current plastic supplies from entering waterways in order to safeguard against cascading impacts in aquatic ecosystems and those that depend on them. 🐟 Explicit references to freshwater health in clauses that currently refer only to marine systems. For example, the clause on fisheries refers only to plastic waste generated from marine fishing gear but overlooks the hundreds of inland freshwater fisheries worldwide.

And it has a very exciting superpower: it can pull carbon out of the atmosphere and act as a sustainable substitute for carbon-intensive products like plastic. 😲🤯 In a video created in collaboration with experts from Maine and beyond, TNC Maine's Jocelyn Runnebaum (Marine Scientist) explores the benefits of seaweed farming, and the novel ways it could address the evolving climate crisis. “With warming temperatures here in the Gulf of Maine, we’re seeing impacts on species distribution, and we’re seeing an impact on the presence of kelp beds that are diminishing because of climate change." One possible solution? "‘Seaweed aquaculture,’ which is the cultivation of kelp or seaweed in the marine environment,” explains Jocelyn. Reduce pollution, establish protected areas, manage fisheries properly? How to protect coral reefs based on carbon trading - Frontiers in Marine Science: As coral reefs around the world have suffered serious damage, it is necessary to protect them. Common modes of coral reef protection include reducing pollution, setting up reserves and managing fisheries rationally. In order to derive the applicable scope of various protection modes for coral reefs, this article constructs three differential game models and compares and analyzes the equilibrium results obtained by the models. Finally, the study shows that whether for developed or developing countries, when the benefits of coral reef treatment are small, the mode of reducing pollution can achieve the maximum benefit. As the benefits of coral reef treatment gradually increase, the mode of setting up nature reserves can achieve the maximum benefit. It is worth noting that the greater the carbon emission rights obtained by the number of coral reefs, the greater the benefits of coral reef treatment, the more likely developed countries will adopt the mode of setting up reserves. https://lnkd.in/gQmBhrZ5

Marine litter is one of the most serious threats to the health of marine ecosystems. Every year, millions of tonnes of plastic and other waste end up in our oceans, endangering marine life and damaging marine-related economic activities. To tackle this growing problem, collaboration between scientists, fishermen and local communities is essential. The presence of litter in the seas not only threatens marine biodiversity, but also undermines human health and the global economy. Negative impacts include the death of marine animals, chemical pollution and habitat destruction. 🐟 Sustainable Seafood Week 🐟 🐟 How many kilograms of greenhouse gas emissions are produced per kilo of wild-caught fish? A study of greenhouse gas emissions of wild fisheries found that each kilogram of fish caught produces between one and five kilograms of carbon. By comparison, red meat production is estimated to range from 50 to 750 kilograms of carbon per kilogram of meat. MSC certified fisheries have effective monitoring and management in place to reduce their impacts on the environment and only catch what is sustainable. Following advice from scientists, these fisheries have pre-agreed plans for responding to likely environmental changes. These fisheries show that it is possible to balance economic and environmental priorities to safeguard our oceans and seafood supplies. Changes in climate are also impacting marine life. Sudden rises in temperature and acidification of the ocean can lead to the loss of marine habitats and species.
