GET IN LINE: There are several obstacles that a “clean energy project” must overcome to obtain an interconnection queue for their project. One large obstacle is the GIQ (generator interconnection queue). Today, almost every regional transmission organization (RTO) and independent system operator (ISO) has a significant backlog in their GIQs. In fact, about 70% of the “clean energy” projects submitted are ultimately withdrawn due to the long wait times (years for some RTOs or ISOs), high cost for new transmission lines, and other upgrades that may be required to handle the increased capacity that their specific project will place on the grid. This has created a significant barrier to deploying renewable energy projects, which in turn has stymied the nation’s green energy plans. 🔎 A recurring topic in the context of #energytransition and #renewableenergy development is the reference to the #gridsystem and the feasibility of accommodating the newly generated capacities. 💡 Considering the ongoing projects and the limitations arising from the requirement for #network enhancements, Transelectrica’s projection estimates that in the next 3 years, 2500MW can be installed in Photovoltaic Power Plants and 500 MW in Wind Power Plants. This assessment does not include the installed capacity attributed to prosumers. The development of renewable power plants is linked to the evolution of #energyconsumption, which has been decreasing in recent years, against the background of the pandemic and the energy crisis, but also to the development of #storage facilities. 👉 You are invited to discover more about the electrical transmission and distribution networks in the 2023 edition of 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐂𝐨𝐝𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐆𝐨𝐨𝐝 𝐏𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐞 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐑𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐰𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞 𝐄𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐠𝐲 𝐒𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐜𝐞𝐬, a project initiated by RWEA - Romanian Wind Energy Association, together with RPIA - Romanian Photovoltaic Industry Association.

📣#CodeofGoodPractice Thursday 🌆A successful #energy transition could only be accomplished if backed up by a strong #grid system. Over the past years the topic concerning the connection to the grid was debated on various occasions and different studies were conducted on the matter. It is of utmost importance for a correlation to exist between the pace at which the #renewables are developing and the feasibility of connecting the new capacities at the grid system. Substantial #investments have been made in recent years for the development of the electrical #distribution network, but in order to anticipate development needs and plan necessary investments, we need #legislative predictability and a good #collaboration with relevant institutions. 👉You are invited to discover more about the transmission networks and distributors, in the 2023 edition of 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐂𝐨𝐝𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐆𝐨𝐨𝐝 𝐏𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐞 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐑𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐰𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞 𝐄𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐠𝐲 𝐒𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐜𝐞𝐬, a project initiated by RPIA - Romanian Photovoltaic Industry Association, together with RWEA - Romanian Wind Energy Association.

The transition to a more sustainable power system occurs differently as parameters such as resource availability, demand, transmission capability, approach to interconnection and impact of imports vary between jurisdictions. Among North American ISOs and regulated balancing authorities, ERCOT exhibits some of the most profound changes. • ERCOT's annual generation mix underwent a significant transformation from 2007 to 2023, as depicted in Figure 1. • Variable renewable energy sources experienced notable growth, elevating their share from 9% to 31% over the period. • Coal saw a substantial decline in the energy mix, being supplanted by wind and solar power, with wind reaching a saturation level at 24% while solar is poised for further expansion, albeit still in its nascent stages within Texas. Keep up to date with our latest thoughts and analysis on the most challenging problems facing the energy industry by subscribing to Energy Transition Today. Competitive Bidding : My personal thoughts. The flexibility being provided by Ministry of New & Renewable Energy ( MNRE) to bid with in-progress projects will give an impetus for more players to participate in the competitive bidding in SECI tenders for solar, wind and hybrid power. This flexibility allows procurement/ lease of suitable land with connectivity, work out the IRR and then bid. With increase in power demand from C&I space and Green Hydrogen requirements picking up,various options open up as the project progresses. #mnre #greenenergy #hydrogen #solar #windenergy

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) has released a Transmission Interconnection Roadmap aimed at speeding up the integration of renewable energy sources, in a major push to modernise the US power grid. Developed by DOE's Interconnection Innovation e-Xchange (i2X) program, the roadmap provides a guide for stakeholders to improve the interconnection process and clear the backlog of nearly 12,000 solar, wind, and storage projects waiting to connect to the grid. "Clearing this backlog is essential to deploying clean electricity," said Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm. "The i2X program is accelerating interconnection by ensuring better data access and improved standards." The roadmap outlines 35 solutions to increase transparency, streamline timelines, and promote economic efficiency, including new fast-track options and harmonised standards. DOE is supporting implementation through funding, technical assistance, and public forums to help achieve the administration's 100% clean electricity goal by 2035. ⚡ Follow MPS (Modern Power Systems) for all the latest news daily from the global power generation industry ⚡ #MPS #power #energy #powergeneration #cleanenergy #renewableenergy

⚡♻️ UK NEWS - National Grid to speed up 20 GW of grid connections for clean energy The acceleration will see 19 battery energy storage projects totalling around 10 GW offered connected dates on its transmission network averaging four years earlier than their current agreement. In addition, 10 GW of unlocked capacity announced recently on National Grid’s distribution network in the Midlands, South West of England and South Wales will speed up the connection of a large number of low carbon projects. The announcement is part of ongoing collaborative industry efforts, along with regulator Ofgem and the government, to accelerate and reform connections. Another wave of clean energy projects, mainly batteries and hybrid projects where batteries are co-located with wind or solar, will be offered faster transmission connections in a new phase expected in the new year, potentially fast tracking a further 10 GW. #gridconnection #ukrenewables #odinglobal #renewableenergy

Canary Media with its in depth reporting on the long (and growing) backlog of energy interconnectin requests. "The growing clean energy backlog, in five charts New clean power and batteries could supplant fossil fuels and meet short-term grid reliability needs — if the U.S. can get them plugged into the grid. For the past four years, researchers at the Department of Energy’s Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory have been tracking a major threat to the U.S. clean energy transition: the backups and bottlenecks in connecting proposed solar, wind, and battery projects to the electricity grid. LBNL’s team laid out their latest findings in a recent webinar. The overarching takeaway is that clean power plants can supply enough near-term electricity to avoid building new fossil-gas-fired power plants or keeping coal plants open longer — but only if something is done about the grid backlog."
