At the end of last year, we commenced our first formal round of consultation for 980 Great West Road, a site representing significant opportunity and potential for the borough of Hounslow. Taking place both in person and online via our virtual exhibition room, we presented our early plans for the redevelopment of the former GSK site, discussing evolving masterplan layouts, landscape principles, urban greening and biodiversity, key character areas, embodied carbon, potential for retention and possible activation of the site for meanwhile use. Following on from our detailed co-design programme in the Autumn, this consultation was a crucial exercise in developing a deeper understanding of local aspirations and needs and how we can bring forward a scheme that complements and benefits the existing community. It was also an opportunity to present the co-design outcomes and how they knit into the evolving masterplan narrative. We have had excellent engagement from the residents of Brentford and wider Hounslow, receiving a high volume of feedback to inform the progression of our plans. Our team are currently analysing the feedback and taking input and ideas on board, which we look forward to sharing at our second round of consultation later this year. You can still view our consultation materials and complete a Have Your Say survey by visiting hellobrentford.co.uk.

We were honored to collaborate with the World Urban Campaign by UN-Habitat and Birmingham City University for the UN-Habitat Urban Thinkers Campus 2024 event, Towards an International Landscape Convention (ILC). This event is a key part of a global initiative to create an ILC, inspired by the success of the European Landscape Convention (ELC). Led by Kathryn Moore, IFLA past president, this movement has gained momentum over the past decade, bringing together academics, institutions, and individuals to expand the ELC’s vision on a global scale. The discussions followed a two-fold approach: 1. Engaging global organizations, academics, and professionals in conceptualizing the ILC. While it will take many more events to draft this convention, the momentum is building! 2. Exploring real-world examples through the West Midlands National Park as a case study, testing cross-sectoral policy drivers, challenges, and opportunities. This initiative marks a significant step in reshaping global #landuse and landscape protection. We’re excited to continue these important discussions! #IFLA #landscapearchitecture #infrastructure

As the saying goes, “when you’ve got to go, you’ve got to go”, but not all public toilets are accessible to everyone. A new research project Accessibility to commercial building’s sanitary facilities is focused on making toilets in public and commercial buildings more inclusive. Led by WSP and supported by Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment, the project will influence updates and related improvements to the Building Code. Partners include design specialists, government departments, councils and community organisations. The research aims to help improve the liveability and attractiveness of public spaces within cities. There was further good news earlier today with the publication of the "Policy Statement on New Towns" . At first glance that seems like a continuation of the Garden Communities Scheme but a potentially key detail is the reference to alignment with economic growth by "releasing the productive potential of constrained towns and cities across England and ensuring our housebuilding drive is aligned with our industrial strategy and national infrastructure plans". Labour's "Plan to Power up Britain" in advance of the manifesto used Savills research to identify Newcastle and Gateshead as a key life science cluster and identified sites in Northumberland, Durham and Teesside has having capacity for "Gigafactories". Whilst its early days, it would be great to see this factor into the locational strategy for a potential New Town in the North East or north of England more generally and to compliment the existing Garden Villages which are already due to make inroads in delivering a large number of new homes. https://lnkd.in/dfC8EVsY

"We have to fix the streets and the buildings that we already have, and we’re wanting to see how can we do that with residents, with the people who actually live in the streets, to see what their hopes are, what they’re worried about, and how can we work together to design streets that work better for everybody." Putting her Retrofit hat on 🤠 Sarah Bell spoke to the Brunswick Voice about the Re-imagining Streets with Green Infrastructure project. The project will examine how areas like Breese Street can be retrofitted to make them more resilient and adaptable in the future. An excellent example of how looking at urban space through a different lens can create value beyond efficiency and commercialisation. That's exactly what we're trying to do at nominute.city: re-coding socio-urban systems with a shift back from ownership to usership and commons, taking into account both the challenges and opportunities of #postgrowth thinking, #multigenerationalism and #climateresilience.
🏃🏼♂️Activating Public Space Through Heritage-Led Regeneration Across Ireland, as in many cities in Europe, heritage buildings often sit on main streets and in strategic locations. However, many of these buildings remain derelict or empty, simply because the cost of acquisition and refurbishment often outweighs their post-renovation value. 📹 Morris Conway, Assistant Architect and THRIVE Project Manager at Waterford City & County Council explains how revitalising heritage buildings like 18 Lady Lane can create a positive ripple effect and breathe new life 🍃 into public spaces. The THRIVE scheme (Town Centre First Heritage Revival) supports the renovation and repurposing of 🇮🇪 Ireland’s vacant or derelict heritage buildings. By doing so, it enhances the surrounding areas, making them more appealing for living, working, and visiting. Most importantly, THRIVE aligns with the values and principles of the New European Bauhaus: promoting sustainability, inclusiveness, and beauty while acknowledging the most pressing needs of local communities. I am extremely proud of ULI NY’s latest Technical Assistance Panel (TAP) report that proposes recommendations for how to reunite Bronx communities devastated by the construction of the Cross Bronx Expressway and help address the decades of health and environmental injustices experienced by Bronxites in the communities surrounding the CBE. The report, Cross Bronx Expressway: Repairing Historic Environmental Inequities Surrounding the CBE, outlines strategies for important and long-overdue public realm investments to improve community connectivity, mitigate stormwater flooding and urban heat, and improve health outcomes for Bronx communities. I am grateful for the work of our expert panel members, led by Regina Myer at the Downtown Brooklyn Partnership, and supported by my amazing teammates Chris Karakul and Carolyn Whelan. We look forward to seeing these ideas implemented in the years ahead. You can read the report here: https://lnkd.in/eVfmwKYV
