Planning approval secured ✅ Miller Goodall Ltd prepared the air quality ES Chapter and lighting impact assessment submissions. The northern facade of the building is opposite railway arches and the route along the northern facade provides a route to a nursery/residential block (staff entrance, and bin collection). An assessment of lighting impact to bats at the arches and ensuring a safe route for the neighbour (security, safety, comfort) was completed. The route, currently, is lit by street lighting spill and has a line of sight to the road, which will be lost once the building goes up. Sometimes, you don't need to overcomplicate a solution. Our lighting design provides several 'box' luminaires fixed to the facade. These have zero upward light spill (zero bat impact), provide a stylish finish and ensure the route feels safe and lit. Also providing the necessary lighting for CCTV. The building frontage will be lit by light from existing street lights. As students return for the Fall semester we are reminded of the critical need for more affordable student housing, especially in Berkeley, our own community. U.C. Berkeley’s campus houses a lower percentage of undergrads and grad students than any other U.C. campus. While the university is working to rectify the problem, most of the need is addressed by private sector housing developers. To meet the need, and get projects to pencil, we are seeing several programmatic and design trends roll out this year. One example is The Valiant, pictured here, which starts construction this month. The project addresses a greater need for privacy and affordability, with more private bedrooms and larger living spaces. Moving away from larger shared bedrooms with two or three beds to a room, as often found in U.C. Berkeley dorms, is a direct response to student requests. In the case of The Valiant, the building also provides welcoming common spaces to facilitate friendships and community-building. Take, for example, the large roof deck, where residents will be able to enjoy beautiful landscaping as well as clear views of the campus - the perfect place to host gatherings. #studenthousing #ucberkeley #ucberkeleyhousing #uchousing

The University of Rhode Island (URI) has partnered with Gilbane Development Company to build housing for over 1,200 students on its Kingston campus. The new residential buildings will feature apartment-style suites, addressing the increasing demand for on-campus housing. Gilbane will lease university-owned land to handle the new residence halls' planning, financing, design, construction, and operation. Currently in its feasibility study phase, the project aims to accelerate the development of additional student housing while maintaining fiscal responsibility. Our modular redevelopment of a historic building in the centre of Southampton has moved a step closer to completion. This regeneration project to restore and revive a prominent site has reached a major construction milestone with the cranage of the final studio apartment modules. 31 High Street is a landmark scheme which is bringing a fire damaged building back to life after it remained derelict for more than a decade. It represents a £12m investment by Stelling Properties and will help to meet the critical undersupply of student accommodation in the city. The five-storey scheme will provide 121 high specification, self-contained studio apartments which will be operated by Unilife Student Living and are due for completion later this year. Columbia Basin College (CBC) in Pasco, Washington, plans to expand its student housing with a $28 million residential building, "Polaris," set to open in 2026. Polaris will house 162 students in suite-style units with kitchens and living areas, alongside amenities like study rooms, a lounge, and bike storage. This expansion responds to increased demand, as the college’s existing Sunhawk Hall is near capacity. The project is part of CBC's 50-year campus plan, which includes new performing arts, agriculture, and engineering facilities to support anticipated enrollment growth in the fast-expanding Tri-Cities region. Polaris is the first of three planned buildings to accommodate future residential needs. Construction will begin in May and require special permits due to its proximity to the Tri-Cities Airport. Developer Olympian has secured funding for its St James House project to build Bristol’s tallest building. The funding agreement with Cain International and Apollo allows construction to advance on the scheme to build a 28-storey student accommodation block and a separate 18-storey co-living homes blocks.
