I absolutely love this bit of innovation from Beryl and I sincerely hope this becomes the norm for shared e bike schemes. Rural connectivity and particularly rural connectivity via active travel is a huge nut that needs cracking and this is a great way to start! A little personal shout out to Beryl from me too; I have used Beryl bikes extensively in Brighton and I think they are the model for bike sharing schemes in the UK for many reasons… One of my favourites is that is that you can get free minutes for returning badly parked bikes to a docking station. People should be rewarded for doing good in their towns and cities. Decentralising the responsibility of keeping streets accessible and welcoming for everyone has to be a good thing. Anecdotally, it’s pretty rare I see bikes blocking up paths in Brighton (and if I do I am always pretty excited to hop on and take it home to a docking station). Whereas in London, at least once or twice a day I see rental e-bikes left in places that make navigating the pavement more difficult. If I find it annoying, imagine how difficult it is for someone with mobility difficulties or who is visually impaired? Power to communities ! #inclusivestreets

We can now announce that Beryl has secured funding for a groundbreaking solar charging project in the UK. Solar powered e-mobility charging hubs will be installed in Cornwall to generate the power required for on-site e-bike battery recharging. This will bring a number of benefits - better for the environment, boosts on-street vehicle availability, boosts trips, reduces operational costs, and more. Free minutes for returning bikes sounds like a real win win, would definitely help with the electric rental bikes and scooters in Bristol too (not beryl). Solar charging is definitely positive step for what is already a promising initiative in large cities!
