The article below outlines some approaches to create an accounting metric for biodiversity in a city state. It also highlight some key differences between different biodiversity metrics used in England. In fact, this is not the first attempt to measure biodiversity in an urban context. More than a decade ago, the Singapore Index on Cities' Biodiversity (SI) was approved by the UN Biodiversity - Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) in 2010. This self-assessment tool contained 28 indicators to measure native biodiversity, associated ecosystem services, and governance issues. More recently, IUCN has published the Urban Nature Index (UNI) to measure cities’ impacts on nature. The UNI enhances environmental transparency and accountability, facilitates goal-setting, and catalyzes conservation action. It comprises 30 indicator topics nested across six themes. Nowadays, with many organizations pledging to publish Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosures (TNFD) reports, there is a lot of interest in measuring biodiversity in urban spaces. Anyone interested in this approach, I highly encourage studying SI and UNI too. #UrbanBiodiversity #TNFD #Nature #BiodiversityAccounting.

🌿 The PENCAS law has been signed! 🌿 The Philippine Ecosystem and Natural Capital Accounting System or PENCAS law is a win for ecosystem restoration and sustainability for the following reasons: 🌳 An accounting framework that measures the stock and flow of natural capital, including biodiversity and ecosystem services. 🔎 Creation of tools and indicators that contribute to the protection, conservation, and restoration of ecosystems. ⚖ Integration of environmental and natural resource concerns into planning and policymaking. 🤝 Involvement of different stakeholders including the private sector, non-government organizations, Indigenous People groups, and local communities. This could generate insightful data invaluable for measuring ecologic baselines needed by nature-based carbon projects in the country under the voluntary carbon market. This would boost the transparency of projects and attract more and more investors looking for high-quality credits. 📈 Read the provisions of the law here: https://lnkd.in/g8NWz6Kg #policy #climate #biodiversity #community #restoration #voluntarycarbonmarket #naturebasedsolutions #carboncredits #ecosystem

🏅 I'm excited to share that I recently completed the short course "The Global Biodiversity Framework, Sustainable Development and the Law" offered by Cambridge University. 📚 The program provided me with a deep understanding of the critical interconnections between global biodiversity, sustainable development, and the legal frameworks that govern these crucial issues — and the short format of the course made for a steep learning curve! I am grateful for having been selected for the course, and that it was generously offered to me free of charge. 🌱 Through the online lectures and assignments, I gained insight into the key essentials for anyone interested in global governance, sustainability, and of course, securing our biodiversity for the generations to come. 🌐 We delved into things like the Global Biodiversity Framework, the challenges and opportunities related to conservation work, and the complex web of international law, treaties and national legislation that shapes how we deal with biodiversity management today. 💚 This program has complemented my current studies at the University of Copenhagen well, and given me tools to contribute more effectively to the critical efforts to safeguard our planet's precious natural resources and ecosystems in the future. #GlobalBiodiversity #SustainableDevelopment #EnvironmentalLaw #BiodiversityManagement #CambridgeUniversity #GlobalBiodiversityFramework #Conservation #Sustainability

❗🌳 The future of Europe’s nature is at stake: time to act 🌳 ❗ 🚨 6,000 scientists called the Nature Restoration law the most important law of our generation. At the final approval stage, EU politicians dropped it from the agenda. Now, it's up to us to call on them to get it right. Here is more: WHAT HAPPENED? 👍 End of February, the European Parliament approved the Nature Restoration Law, marking a significant step towards the restoration of Europe's ecosystems. 🇪🇺 After the law had been fully negotiated, a minority of EU member states (e.g. Austria and Poland) suddenly withdrew their support, preventing the adoption of legislation designed to reverse decades of ecosystem degradation and to halt biodiversity loss. Now, the law has been taken off the agenda of the Council of the EU for not having the support of the required majority. WHAT IS THE NATURE RESTORATION LAW? AND WHY IS IT IMPORTANT? ⚠️ Around 80 percent of the EU’s habitats are in poor ecological condition. In order to stop the decline the law aimed to achieve the following by 2030: 🟢 20% of the EU's land and marine areas are to be restored, with a commitment to restoring all ecosystems in need by 2050. 🟢 Drained peatlands in agricultural ecosystems are to be rewetted, and new measures to protect our forests are to be introduced. 🟢 There must be no net loss of urban greenery, with an increase in the share of green spaces and trees. 🟢 Over 25,000 km of river barriers are to be removed 🌍 We need to ensure food safety and sustainable livelihoods for our farmers. But we cannot do this at the expense of preserving and restoring nature. WHAT CAN YOU DO? 🗣️ Businesses, people, scientists, everyone - let’s spread the word to raise awareness and give the issue the attention it deserves. Share the news - on the law, why it is needed, what’s at stake and let’s make it clear that WE CARE. This is for us. Our future. #restorenature #eunrl

Yesterday's approval of the EU's Nature Restoration Law is a landmark moment for environmental recovery. By setting ambitious targets to restore at least 20% of the EU's land and sea areas by 2030, and all ecosystems in need by 2050, the law provides a clear and actionable framework for environmental recovery. "It's great that this has finally come to fruition. It's an important step in the fight against biodiversity loss and climate change." says Lisa Wiatschka, innovation consultant for Wetlands, Agriculture and Climate Change. "It aligns with our mission to foster sustainable innovation and support projects that deliver tangible environmental and economic benefits." The projected return on investment—between €4 and €38 for every euro spent—highlights the significant positive impact that well-planned restoration can achieve. Passing this law represents a critical victory for environmental policy in the EU, overcoming significant opposition and demonstrating a strong commitment to addressing the urgent challenges of our time. We look forward to continuing our work in this field and collaborating with stakeholders to implement and exceed these targets. #RespectEnvironment AQUIND welcomes the opinion of the Inspection générale de l'environnement et du développement durable (IGEDD) (Ministry of Ecological Transition and Territorial Cohesion) in France in respect of AQUIND’s application for Environmental Authorisation currently being examined by the Seine-Maritime Prefecture. The opinion highlights the clarity and completeness of the submitted application. It recognises the seriousness of the work carried out and the rigour with which environmental issues were taken into account in the choice of route. It confirms the sound assessment of the environmental issues identified and the project's potential impacts, particularly on marine and aquatic environments, wetlands, noise pollution, the landscape and the use of agricultural land. The application is supported by impact studies for the terrestrial and marine components, and the application has been regularly updated to incorporate feedback from the public consultation and local authorities. The main recommendations focus on the need to continue to take proper account of environmental issues when finalising the final technical choices. AQUIND, which has given priority to technical solutions that minimise environmental impacts, while specifying the impacts and measures for the construction and operation phases, is committed to continuing the project on this basis. This is an encouraging opinion and good news for the rest of the project. This IGEDD opinion will be included in the documents available during the public enquiry. Nicolas Castex Martin DUBOURG
