The Well Foundation is raising funds to create the NZ’s first-ever large-scale, indoor hospital Healing Garden. The team at For The Love of Bees really connected with this quote from Well Foundation CEO Tim Edmonds on why the project is so important: “We know that being in a hospital can be a stressful experience, and hospitals are typically sterile, clinical environments, with limited access to nature. Yet international research shows that green spaces in hospitals not only encourage relaxation and reduce stress for patients, visitors and healthcare workers, but can also help speed up recovery and improve clinical outcomes." It is World Water Day. A time to reflect on the urgency for the need for drinking water and also what can be done to raise the bar when it comes to WASH (Water, Sanitation and Hygiene) initiatives. At the Rotary Club of Sentosa, Singapore, we have been actively involved in WASH projects in primary and secondary schools in Siem Reap, Cambodia by building toilets and washing stations. This is supplemented by education of proper hygiene standards, the need for washing hands and also to refrain from practices that are unsafe. This education extends to the families of the students, the village leadership and the villagers. Our projects are supported by generous donors in the region and also helped by Global Grants from Rotary International. Since 2020, we have built toilets and washing stations in 45 schools, at the same time providing many of them with water filters for potable water. Organisations like WATER.ORG are playing an important role in alleviating the water situation in South East Asia with urgency and purpose. Not data for data’s sake; but to pilot what’s possible with resource streams that can be recovered for environmental and social benefits, and sometimes unexpectedly combined to add value - add reach - create further positive impact. The World relies on Fishing and more so Aquaculture for a large percentage of our protein needs and food security. These two sectors must be driven by the standards we set ourselves and for the future of fish. In order to achieve this all stake holders must have a seat at the table and communication has to take place. The current hold over there sectors and the status quo are only damaging to everyone. To use the term "My side of the boat is not sinking" is not working and will not work. Billions of people as many as 1/3 of the worlds population rely on fish as their major source of protein. How we manage, protect and preserve this is critical to mankind and to the planet. The seeds of change are being planted, nurtured and must yield the fruits of these efforts. Together we can make a difference, together we can preserve fish resources for generations to come. On Wednesday, I spent an excellent evening at a #fundraising event organised by Woop Woop and Tir Pontypridd. TP are a #community group aiming to raise funds for the purchase of land in the Pontypridd area; land that will be used for #biodiversity and #wellbeing purposes. Also attended by Tir Natur – a #charity created to purchase and #rewild land in bio-depleted uplands of Mid #Wales – we watched the excellent @kneppestate documentary and contemplated the possibilities for returning a greater balance to our use of land, our consideration of #nature and the utilisation of natural resources. The Q&A session was particularly inspirational. I am of course, horribly biased. This is a subject that is close to my heart and colours my thinking. I absolutely believe that with a little #creativity, #imagination and #commitment, #businesses can play an incredibly active part in both the #dialogue and in making things happen. As businesses we make choice after choice that affect our local and wider #communities, with decision making that is often accidentally naïve. To broaden clear opportunities, we just need that heady mix of the right crowd, the right ideas and constructive #conversation (leading to expert #conservation) to nudge/push/pull/drag (delete as applicable) things in the right direction. 📣 Just released: Bridges issue 2 2023 The project “Promoting sustainable development through UNESCO’s programmes and sites”, funded by the abrdn Charitable Foundation, reached its second cycle, for which the geographical purview was extended to Europe and North America. 👏🌍 The launch event brought together the new sites of the second-year cycle and those of the first-year cycle to exchange experience and share hands-on knowledge.
