London’s Heathrow Airport saw record passenger numbers during peak summer months, with 7.97 million travellers in August alone. This marked the fourth consecutive month of record traffic and the busiest day ever on August 18, with 269,000 passengers. Despite high volumes, service levels remained strong. However, Heathrow faces challenges from a new UK electronic travel permit scheme affecting transfer passengers, potentially jeopardizing its status as Europe's top hub. The airport is exploring minor infrastructure upgrades to increase capacity but faces a cap of 480,000 flights per year. Long-term expansion plans, including a controversial third runway, are under consideration, with recent government signals suggesting openness to expansion if it meets climate criteria. Meanwhile, other UK airports like Manchester and Stansted also reported record traffic, indicating strong travel demand despite rising fares. 📰 More details on this story in the next issue of the Momberger Airport Information newsletter. ➡️ Sign up for a free two-month trial here: https://lnkd.in/g8SjE2pp Please type "trial" in the user instructions window. #momberger #airports #airportdevelopment #airportoperations #infrastructure #airtransport #construction #ppp #privatization #europe #uk #lhr #globaleconomy #aviationindustry Image credit: Heathrow Airport

This... 👇 Councillor Shelley Carroll, ICD.D of the City of Toronto recently published in her e-blast the following: “Speaking of downtown, Billy Bishop Airport continues to offer one of the best small airport experiences around and visitors are noticing. They recently introduced passport pre-clearance, which makes quick business trips to places like Boston and Chicago almost effortless. Nieuport Aviation, the owners of the Billy Bishop terminal, have also started to add visual art installations and live music to the airport to give visitors a taste of what’s in store for them in Toronto. They’ve also made great strides improving the pick-up and drop-off in front of the terminal for shuttle buses, taxis, and family chauffeurs. Very soon, we will need to grapple with the future of Billy Bishop Airport. New federal aviation rules mean that adjustments will need to be made for planes to continue landing. To make these critical investments, the airport needs certainty that it will be able to continue operating its great service. For instance, it’s currently limited in the types of planes it can land. Imagine if instead of the outdated turboprop planes, it could accommodate modern aircraft that are greener and quieter. This would dramatically improve sustainability and livability near the airport while enhancing a key asset of our local visitor economy.” Millions of people, including roughly 80% of voting Torontonians, want this Airport to not just survive, but to thrive. And PortsToronto wants to continue serving Cleaner, Greener, Quiter to Torontonians through our Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport for the next 85 years. Thank you Councillor. #TransportationReimagined #YTZ85 #CityBuilding #Connection

The recent study from Arizona State University's W.P. Carey School of Business reveals a staggering 15% increase in the Phoenix airport system's economic impact, now standing at $44.3 billion annually. This growth isn't just about airports; it's about driving prosperity across the region. For residential real estate, the expanding airport system presents a promising opportunity. The increased demand for housing in nearby areas, driven by the airport's growth, is set to boost property values and rental rates. This, coupled with the thriving ecosystem around Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport, is expected to enhance the overall quality of life, making residential properties in these areas even more appealing. The airport system's growth isn't just about flights; it's also about fueling the housing market and enhancing communities. #PhoenixAirport #EconomicImpact #ArizonaEconomy #SkyHighSuccess #RealEstate

CEO of Ever-Evolving Consulting & Creator of “Gateway”: Championing Advocacy and Innovative Strategies for Micro & Minority Businesses in Airports
In supporting micro, small, local, and minority-owned businesses in the airport concessions industry, I've seen firsthand the immense value that programs designed specifically for these enterprises can bring. Airports looking to foster a diverse and vibrant concessions program would be wise to consider such initiatives. Here's why: 1. Increased Participation and Representation: Programs catered to micro, small, local, and minority-owned businesses open the door for these enterprises to participate in the lucrative airport concessions market. This enhances representation and diversity, creating a more inclusive and dynamic environment. 2. Capacity Building and Growth: These specialized programs provide the guidance, resources, and opportunities these businesses need to navigate the complexities of the airport industry. 3. Economic Impact and Job Creation: By empowering micro, small, local, and minority-owned businesses, airports can drive economic development in their communities. These enterprises are more likely to reinvest locally, creating jobs and opportunities for underserved populations. 4. Unique Offerings and Guest Experience: Diverse concessions programs curated through initiatives as “GATEWAY” bring a fresh perspective and one-of-a-kind offerings. This enhances the overall guest experience, catering to the evolving preferences of modern travelers. 5. Regulatory Compliance and Supplier Diversity: Many airports are under mandates to incorporate supplier diversity and meet regulatory requirements. Partnering with programs designed for micro, small, local, and minority-owned businesses help airports fulfill these obligations while fostering an inclusive ecosystem. If you're an airport executive looking to elevate your concessions program, I encourage you to explore “GATEWAY”, a framework program connecting airports to small businesses around the world. The benefits we offer can transform your airport into a thriving hub that celebrates diversity and supports the growth of local enterprises. "If you build it, they will come." This phrase does not only ring true when it comes to new roads or bike lanes, but also to #masstransit. Barely 1,5 years after its gradual opening, the #ElizabethLine is already the most used rail service in the entire UK and its #London stations now completely dominate the top 10 of busiest rail hubs in the country. According to Transport for London an estimated 30% of journeys on the line are 'new' demand, so trips that would not have been made, or that would have been made with another mode... #crossrail #modalshift

A great article to make anyone who was part of Crossrail to feel proud all over again. It includes some amazing stats such as: TfL figures suggest that around thirty per cent of the Elizabeth Line journeys were ‘new’ demand. In other words, the service generated trips which would not have been made without the existence of the Elizabeth Line, or were modal shift from non-public transport. and The railway is now carrying one in six of all rail passenger journeys in Great Britain. It also lists the top 10 busiest stations in Great Britain and those outside London. Unbelievably, the 7th busiest station in Britain is Tottenham Court Road, which doesn't have any traditional mainline services (if you exclude Elizabeth line) unlike those above it in the table. And it still handles over 4 million more passengers a year than Birmingham New Street, the busiest station outside London. https://lnkd.in/emvYEiwV.

The new Labour government in the UK has expressed an open-minded approach to the expansion of Heathrow Airport's third runway, contingent on meeting four key tests: compatibility with climate targets, noise pollution control, air pollution standards, and nationwide economic benefits. This stance marks a pragmatic shift, balancing economic growth with environmental concerns. Although there is currently no application for the third runway, Heathrow's management is prioritising smaller expansions to increase passenger capacity from 80 million to 100 million, with long-term plans for a new runway.
