📌 On the sidelines of the 3rd International Conference on Public Health in Africa (CPHIA 2023), Africa CDC and GIZ African Union will organise an official side event titled "Strengthening Cooperation between Africa CDC and Regional Economic Communities (RECs) towards Africa's Health Security." The side event aims to explore ways to improve cooperation and collaboration between continental and regional bodies to ensure a safer and healthier Africa. Africa CDC and the RECs have distinct comparative advantages that can be harnessed to address the high disease burden in the continent. However, cooperation across both levels is still limited, with room for significant improvement. RECs are the building blocks of the African Union and have significant responsibilities to support the advancement of continental development goals. As the health sector plays a crucial role in the policy objectives of the RECs, they share the responsibility of delivering better health outcomes with continental and national institutions. It is therefore essential to increase intra and inter-regional integration and cooperation to improve health outcomes at all levels. Africa CDC and RECs provide a significant value proposition to the achievement of the Africa Health Strategy (2016 - 2030), various regional health strategies, as well as the New Public Health Order. The Grand Inga-Dam Project is a priority for Africa's development and to ensure universal energy access. The total construction bill has been calculated to be as high as $80 Billion. The Dam is expected to generate an estimated 43,200MW of power to support current regional power pools and their combined service to transform Africa from traditional to modern sources of energy and ensure access to clean and affordable electricity. Over half a billion people in Africa are at risk of being left behind without electricity access by 2030. Africa is where the energy access battle will be won or lost. Without access to reliable, affordable, and sustainable energy, the region will not reach its development aspirations or achieve an economic transformation that can lift millions out of poverty. Last year November, I had the incredible opportunity to represent Nigeria as a delegate at the 2nd Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) Youth Pre-Conference. This event, held as a side event at the margins of the 3rd International Conference on Public Health in Africa in Lusaka, Zambia, showcased the inspiring leadership of young Africans in tackling our continent's public health challenges head-on. During the conference, passionate young leaders from across Africa came together to advocate for meaningful youth engagement in shaping the continent's health agenda. Together, we put forward key recommendations to Africa CDC and member states, highlighting the importance of involving youth not only as partners but as drivers of the continental health security agenda. Development of Africa CDC’s Youth Engagement Strategy. We welcomed the development of Africa CDC’s Youth Engagement Strategy and emphasized the need for youth-led processes in its development. Establishment of a Dedicated Public/Global Health Programme for Youths. We called for the establishment of a dedicated programme to ensure continued youth involvement in decision-making within Africa CDC and to drive the implementation of the Youth Engagement Strategy. Strengthening Collaboration and Coordination. We stressed the importance of multi-disciplinary and multi-sectoral collaboration to effectively address public health challenges on the continent. Leadership Capacity Building. We proposed the creation of a Young Public Health Leadership Fellowship to strengthen the leadership capacities of youth advocates, policymakers, innovators, researchers, and entrepreneurs. Creation of an Innovation Hub. We advocated for the establishment of an innovation hub, such as the Youth in Digital Health Network, to foster investment and connect creative, future-focused youth driving health transformations in Africa. Together, these recommendations represent a collective vision for a healthier, more resilient Africa, led by empowered youth at the forefront of change. Donors play a pivotal role in supporting local civil society networks, ensuring accountability among UN agencies, and advocating for the inclusion of local actors in setting clear research priorities. 👉 Community engagement is fundamental for understanding local needs and crafting tailored solutions. The unsung heroes, innovators on the ground, work tirelessly alongside researchers, policymakers, and local organisations, addressing daily challenges with innovative solutions. 👉 Optimising funding requires strategic allocation. The annual #International #Conference on #publichealth in #Africa #cphia2023 is currently underway! This forum like the previous two, provides an important forum for African leaders and experts to discuss health and scientific advancement challenges and opportunities. This unique African-led platform provides a priceless opportunity to learn about emerging strategies and exemplary models for strengthening resilient health systems across the continent. A primary focal point deserving attention at this conference is the imperative need for decolonization within the domain of public health. This necessitates a thorough examination of past lessons to foster consensus among African leaders on the development of more impartial and comprehensive health systems. Integrating insights not only from internal experiences but also from global movements, particularly examining the Latin American perspective on decolonizing health, would be useful at this point. In essence, this conference represents an ideal opportunity for African leaders to pool their collective expertise, share valuable experiences, and advocate for transformative systemic changes aimed at decolonizing public health across the continent. Regional collaborative effort to address emerging local health system issues have consistently proven its potential to significantly increase influence, paving the way for a more impartial, comprehensive, and equitable health system accessible to all Africans.

We are #pleased to announce the signing of our latest Memorandum of Understanding (#MoU) between Bloom Public Health and the West African Institute of Public Health (#WAIPH). This agreement was signed in Lusaka, #Zambia, on the sidelines of the Conference on Public Health in Africa (#CPHIA) 2023 on November 28, 2023. This collaboration is evidence of both organizations' #dedication to maintaining continental #advancements spearheaded by the Africa Union and its health agency, the Africa CDC and promoting #publichealth in the area. Through program implementation, research initiatives, and capacity-building, this ground-breaking partnership promises to transform public health across the #African continent and bring it into compliance with the new Public Health Order. The CEO of Bloom Public Health, Professor Chimezie Anyakora expressed his happiness about collaborating with #WAIPH, saying that it could open up new opportunities for capacity building, innovation, and research as well as greatly aid in the continent's efforts to meet public health goals. The DG/CEO of the West African Institute of Public Health (#WAIPH), Dr Francis O., also expressed his enthusiasm about the partnership, stating its significance as a crucial step forward for public health in West Africa and beyond.
