Marine pollution is caused by all the substances discharged into seas and oceans due to human activities. It reaches marine environments through rivers, winds, the air, or through direct discharges into the sea. Today, we are all impacted and concerned...therefore, we must take action and implement concrete, sustainable measures tailored to local contexts... RE-SWEEP is working on several strategic and projects to prevent and reduce marine pollution from waste, particularly plastic waste in the Mediterranean... 🌊 World Oceans Day Alert! 🌊 Plastic pollution is a critical issue in our oceans, especially in the Mediterranean, where 95% of floating debris consists of plastics. Microplastics have reached an alarming density of 1.25 million fragments per km². This severe pollution endangers marine life, particularly Leatherback Sea Turtles, which often mistake plastics for jellyfish, leading to serious internal injuries. Malta's waters are not immune to this crisis. The island nation has made significant strides in marine conservation, evidenced by the hatching of 17 Loggerhead turtles in Gnejna Bay last year. This event brings hope and underscores the importance of our efforts to protect marine ecosystems. Together with marine conservation, Malta has made impressive strides in waste management, which has a direct bearing on the health of the ocean. Over 20,000 tonnes of recyclable waste were processed by WasteServ and redirected into the economy last year—the largest amount in Maltese history. In addition, mixed waste from households decreased by 23%, which is the least quantity WasteServ has received in 20 years. These accomplishments show that recycling programs and garbage separation techniques have significantly improved, which helps lower the quantity of waste that ends up in our oceans. #WorldOceansDay #MaltaOceans #Sustainability #EnvironmentalAwareness
