A great start to 2024, as we're delighted to announce having been selected to participate in Phase 2 of 'GCRE: Railway Construction Innovation'. GCRE is the new Global Centre Of Rail Excellence, currently being built in South Wales to research, test and certify innovative new rail technologies. Our part in the project is to reduce the embodied carbon in concrete sleeper production (~350,000 units manufactured per annum). Using our #graphene-enhanced admixture and working with project partner CEMEX UK, we'll be helping Network Rail achieve ambitious targets for reduction in emissions of 46% (scope 1,2) and 28% (scope 3) by 2029. Concretene co-founder Alex McDermott said: "We're really pleased to have made it through to the second phase of the GCRE project, which is critical to the future of a more sustainable rail industry.   “I’ve spent many years working on rail infrastructure and understand the costs and time pressures around repair and renewal of the network. From the results of the dynamic analysis carried out using #OasysGSA on a pedestrian footbridge in Bad Hersfeld, Germany, schlaich bergermann partner sbp agreed with the client to provide two accessible and lockable reservations in the bridge deck. This would allow for tuned mass dampers to be installed after a joint evaluation of the constructed bridge. The use of #GSA on this project provided the engineers with confidence in the bridge design as they were able to predict the dynamic behaviour of the bridge very accurately and discuss the comfort behaviour with the client. I’d like to take a minute and reflect on the incredible impact that committee work has had and continues to have on the Virginia Transportation Construction Alliance (VTCA), and more so, the industry as a whole. Things are always changing and evolving. As a result, challenges, issues, unintentional consequences, whatever the case may be, an intentional look into the impacts are critical to forward progress. These committees exemplify the true spirit of collaboration. Whether it's addressing industry challenges, or shaping and re-tweaking specifications and policies, the work of these committees often goes quietly unnoticed by most people, yet the benefits are felt throughout the Commonwealth by all. The reality is that they are the heartbeat of progress and transformation. So…, a heartfelt thank you to the passionate individuals who dedicate their time, energy, and expertise to VTCA’s committees. Your commitment is the driving force behind the positive impact we as a group make in the transportation arena. I might add, interested in being a catalyst for change and contributing to the future of Virginia's transportation landscape? Explore VTCA’s committees, engage with peers in the industry, and be a part of keeping Virginia moving. There is important work yet to be done.

At the Cornell Program in Infrastructure Policy (CPIP), our hearts go out to those who were affected by the Francis Scott Key bridge collapse. We know there will be an urgency to rebuild this bridge, which is critical to transportation in the mid-Atlantic region. Public-private partnerships can be very effective in accelerating such a plan and contribute significantly to the speed and efficiency of replacing the bridge. CPIP encourages collaboration and the forward-looking policies to ensure the resilience of our country’s infrastructure for the future.

As America's infrastructure ages, countless local governments across the country find themselves at an important crossroads. Faced with the often expensive and critical task of upgrading their local infrastructure, they must decide how to proceed: the most economical option? incremental patchwork? or large-scale overhaul programs that will be a long-term investment in the future. Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, recently faced this challenge, and it decided to look to the future by undertaking a massive overhaul of its aging water system. The city chose SAM as a partner to make these vital improvements, and the program ended up requiring extensive knowledge of multiple geospatial and engineering disciplines. Luckily, SAM's Managed Geospatial Solutions™ framework was uniquely suited to the challenge.
