The Smart Energy Conference and Exhibition 2024 concluded yesterday and was packed with thought provoking discussions.  Part II of our highlights: We heard from the panel of “Unlocking Trade Potential’ comprising of James Choi (J2 Advisory), Richard Andrews (Australia Japan Business Co-Operation Committee), Florence Lindhaus (Australia-German Chamber of Industry) and Dr. Larry Marshall (Fortescue and Amcham) about the need to create a global hydrogen market. The Australian government must provide leadership in this regard for Australia to capitalise on these opportunities including supplying hydrogen products.  “In Conversation with Malcolm Turnbull” opened with Mr. Turnbull’s statement that Australia has every resource except time. The conversation covered a variety of topics including the reliability of the United States as a strategic ally, the need for Australia to become more self-reliant and strategic in its alliances with middle powers, the role of pumped hydrogen in the energy mix and the need to retain and attract women in the clean energy sector.  The session “Surmounting Hydrogen Hurdles” featured Scott Hamilton (Smart Energy Council), John Kristian Johnsen (Bergen Engines), Nick Easingwood (ANZ), Jane Edquist (DCCEW), Huw Dent (Redrawn Australia) and Julie-Anna Smith (Bureau Veritas) highlighted how banks are slowly coming to the table to fund hydrogen projects. Technology risk (electrolysers in particular), process risks and rising demand are key hurdles affecting bankability. The European Parliament has finally adopted its position on the Net-Zero Industry Act! #NZIA   MEPs reached a position on this important piece of legislation during their Plenary session in Strasbourg, marking another step towards delivering the Green Deal Industrial Plan (#GDIP). The vote marks a milestone to further bolster European #competitiveness in #cleantech manufacturing.   Parliamentarians now formally consider #hydrogen technologies as strategic, expanding the scope of the Act towards a more encompassing view of the entire hydrogen #valuechain. It also targets the establishment of a broader definition of processed materials needed for the manufacturing of #NetZero #technologies, and increases objectives for the manufacturing of #cleantechnologies in Europe.   While many of these developments are welcome, #H2Europe still sees room for improvement in terms of next steps from co-legislators. For instance, the inclusion of hydrogen #storage as a strategic technology, allowing a coherent value chain approach for hydrogen #deployment, and extending non-price criteria for net-zero technologies procurement and #renewable and hydrogen #auctions. The Port of Rotterdam and Fraunhofer-Institut für Solare Energiesysteme ISE are developing a Trilateral Hydrogen Hub (TrHyHub), which will be the key link in the new supply chain from Australia to Europe. This collaborative initiative, which is supported by the Western Australian, German and Dutch governments, aims to facilitate the production and export of green hydrogen to Europe, while fostering knowledge exchange and creating commercial opportunities for companies. More information on this project: https://lnkd.in/ezDBaeze Since yesterday, representatives from #industry, #consulting, #engineering, #politics and #investors are gathering Fraunhofer ISE for the workshop »Green Hydrogen Export Acceleration | German-Dutch Industrial Reference Group«. They want to establish a #hydrogen #supply #chain from Western Australia via Port of Rotterdam to Germany. To this end, they want to develop business models, remove remaining regulatory and infrastructure obstacles and accelerate the export of green hydrogen from Australia. The workshop connects the production side with customers and the political side.
