NWO (Dutch Research Council) shines the spotlight on the societal impact of research proposals "When submitting their research proposal, researchers must reflect on the possible consequences of their research, both desirable and undesired. NWO will also look more critically at its own collaborations with third parties. An assessment framework has been drawn up for this purpose to assess research collaborations. NWO takes these steps to carry out the best research with the greatest contribution to science and society." (Own translation from Dutch) We welcome NWO´s move. Recently, Scientists for Future Netherlands has engaged with NWO about their policy regarding academic collaborations with fossil companies. This led to several publications, first by Guus Dix, Klaas Landsman and Roderik Van De Wal in Trouw: https://lnkd.in/es7w57qM This newspaper replied by getting their philosophical team onto the topic: https://lnkd.in/exF7FG8n https://lnkd.in/emzPz7JM #climatecrisis #researchintegrity #gsp

Last week I had the opportunity to join the #Internationalweek at Mälardalen University in Vasteras. The discussions were inspiring and made me reflect about some things we have just gotten for free by being born in a certain location or in a certain moment in history. I also participated in a discussion about #energysolutions in a global perspective. Thank you Mikael N. Hjorth, Anders Wijkman and JinYue yan for driving the panel and for the good discussions. We, the people, have the responsibility to look after our planet, and from industry we need to bring solutions that adapt to different needs enabling sustainable and affordable energy to all! #Techonolgy is ready to this challenge. Solutions such as #HVDC, #Statcom, #BESS are fundamental to provide the required flexibility and resilience the grid needs today and tomorrow. Our energy ecosystem keeps evolving and more than ever #collaboration is key. Building #diverse working teams were #newtalents, #academia and industry leaders look together at the future is key to succeed in this journey. #hitachienergy #energysolutions #powerelectronics #HVDC #technology #academia #newtalents #ai #diverseteams #energytransition #affordableenergy #decarbonization #collaboration

⭐ YEAIS winner spotlight! ⭐ Andrei Leonard Nicusan and Roberto Hart-Villamil, winners of the Young Engineers Awards for Innovation and Sustainability Postgraduate category for their joint submission 'Energy Reduction in Industrial Processes via Evolutionary Optimisation of Simulation’. Expanding on the duo's motivation for entering the awards, Andrei-Leonard said: "The work that we are doing has wide applicability to industry. Companies are being encouraged to reduce waste and become more efficient and more sustainable. But the main problem is that, historically, sustainability and profitability have been at odds. "Using artificial intelligence, we are looking to try to make sure that sustainability and profitability are no longer in opposition. By discovering geometries and processing conditions that are far more optimal than what we currently have, we can ensure that companies increase their throughput, profit and efficiency, while decreasing waste and making processes more sustainable." Picture: Andrei-Leonard collecting the award on behalf of the duo. At the grand Opening of the Academic Year at Eindhoven University of Technology we heard inspiring and interesting views on technological innovation and its role in society. If TU/e makes "valorization" the main focus of the OAY2023, what does that mean for the direction of TU/e? We had a great opportunity to ask the new rector Silvia Lenaerts. "It is also about connecting to the real world, about cognitive diversity, about safeguarding European values." She was responsible for valorization at the University of Antwerp. She came to TU Eindhoven, world leading in industry-academic valorisation. Her research is Sustainable Energy, Air and Water Technology, while energy, the environment and sustainability are key innovation areas to TU/e. Now, as the new rector of TU/e, Silvia Lenaerts puts forward "valorization" as the main theme for the Opening of the Academic Year 2023. Yet, valorization for her is broader than a commercial transfer. Silvia Lenaerts wants to orient TU more towards society. Dissemination requires us to stay connected to the real world. Getting input from outside in. Reaching out to a broader audience. For that, TU needs "Cognitive diversity" from a broad range of disciplines. Academics do not only educate and not only do research, but also need to work on valarization, and that can be in many different forms. https://lnkd.in/eDwa3TqW Photo: Bart van Overbeeke Fotografie
