The power of partnerships for healthtech innovation. (The awesome acronyms don't hurt either.) >>> The TLDR: it's a nearly $50M federal award for a research team at Case Western Reserve University to "begin work on engineering, growing and commercializing 'live' replacement joints" to treat osteoarthritis. The "OMEGA Team" includes CWRU, Colorado State University, The Ohio State University, Rice University and Washington State University--as well as Sapphiros AI Bio, University Hospitals, the Louis Stokes Cleveland Vamc, and Massachusetts General Hospital. (OMEGA refers to Orchestrating Multifaceted Engineering for Growing Artificial joints.) It's full of alpha scientists. The award is part of DHHS's Novel Innovations for Tissue Regeneration in Osteoarthritis (NITRO) program. It's designed to boost projects that address health problems that defy traditional research or regular commercial activity. The goal is clear: "solutions . . . to benefit everyone." With the help Ohio Life Sciences, OhioX, UH, The MetroHealth System (Cleveland, OH), Cleveland Clinic and the vibrant work of so many biotech and medtech companies, Cleveland (and NEOhio) definitely rocks.

USING BACTERIAL-BASED SILK IN MEDICAL APPLICATIONS 🌍 Explore how Latvian startup PrintyMed develops medical applications using bacterial-based spider silk, by modifying bacteria to produce spider silk proteins, spun into fibers for heart valves and tissue scaffolds. Meanwhile, Germany-based AMSilk GmbH | Biotech Materials produces silk proteins through fermentation with genetically modified bacteria, creating silk-based fibers, hydrogels, and powders tailored for medical and consumer applications. 📁 Additionally, H.I.G. Capital’s investment in Naturalia Tantum positions the firm as a key player in the sustainable beauty market. By leveraging Naturalia Tantum’s expertise in natural and organic personal care, HIG can potentially capitalize on growing consumer demand for environmentally friendly options. 💸 Beyond that, Copenhagen-based startup Again raised EUR 43 million Series A funding to transform CO2 into valuable green chemicals, which holds immense potential to decarbonize the chemical industry. 💡 Finally, LUMO Labs has launched a EUR 100 million fund to invest in impact-driven startups, underscoring the growing focus on tech solutions for global challenges. By targeting companies aligned with the UN Sustainable Development Goals, Lumo Labs aims to drive positive change across Europe.
