We are excited to welcome three new members to IEEP's Strategic Advisory Council, which provides insight and inspiration from knowledgeable and respected individuals and guides IEEP’s research priorities, engagement initiatives, and communications planning. Environmental experts Chiara Martinelli (CAN Europe) and Luc Bas (CERAC), and communications specialist Claudia La Donna (Hanover) joined the panel of respected scientists, policymakers, and academics including Sandrine Dixson-Declève, Sirpa Pietikäinen, Andrea Kohl, Christian Hey, David Stanners, Derek Osborn, Nick Molho, Petros Fassoulas, and Ralph Hallo. 👉 https://lnkd.in/dqbar7kw Our societies are being challenged by a multitude of driving forces, which divert attention away from existential threats represented by global warming, biodiversity loss, unsustainable food production, and economic activities exceeding the ecological limits of our planet. As the world is now entering the decisive phase for tackling many of these problems, especially with the first Plenary of the newly elected European Parliament determining who will lead legislation in this critical time, IEEP must streamline its work to maximise its impact in national, European, and global policymaking. 📑 Read about the proposals included in the #Think2030 Science for Policy sessions for the implementation of the European Green Deal ⤵ https://lnkd.in/dEbfYk9H #Plenary #EUGreenDeal #EnvironmentalGovernance #Biodiversity #ClimateCrisis #ClimateChange #SustainableFoodSystems #GlobalWarming

Looking forward to this discussion on how the UK can deliver a regulatory system that works for the environment. Our report will outline a set of principles that Government should adopt to ensure that the system delivers the environmental improvements we urgently need. Resourcing, a focus on outcomes and a cross-sector approach will be vital.
What does smart regulation look like and how can it drive improved environmental outcomes in the UK? Join us to discuss at our upcoming report launch event featuring expert contributions from Wessex Water, Nestlé, and SUEZ UK. We're pleased to confirm that we'll also be joined by Sir James Bevan KCMG, former Chief Executive of the Environment Agency for a keynote address on this key issue. Find out more and register for this discussion on 12th March from 9.30am below: https://lnkd.in/ehgjWaep

Professor of Comparative Employment Relations and Director of Sustainability Leeds University Business School.
CCERF is a new funding mechanism to stipulate research on the environment as well as climate change more specifically within Leeds University Business School. We had a great workshop today, five projects presenting their results. My main take aways from my colleagues recent work: 📢 Support for climate action is stronger among countries in the Global South which suffer already more from climate damage. Also the more individualistic values people have the less likely they are to support climate action. (project Christian Bretten/ Felix Schulz, CERIC Leeds University Business School) 📢 In the last three years there is an increase in green marketing. (project Ming Chen/ Jieke Chen 📢 Climate action organisations have good inclusivity policies. More needs to be done to make climate action policies more inclusive (project Shahla Ghobadi) 📢 1st Climate and Sustainability Finance Conference hold in April in Leeds gathered experts in the field and discussed the most pressing research agenda. But we need to ensure journals don't take too long to publish policy relevant research! (project Konstantinos Bozos/ Bin Xu) 📢 A new open source tool to optimise planning investments, more precisely a tool calculating the best combination of organic resource for producing biomethane (project David Palma/ Richard Hodgett) Thanks to Natasha Francis, Hannah Preston and Charlotte Stephenson and our Dean Julia Bennell and our Pro-Deans for Research Mark Stuart and Yingqi Wei supporting this new funding scheme. #research, #climatechange, #environment

Today (Monday 26th), the 6th session of United Nations Environment Assembly (#UNEA6) - the world’s top decision-making body on the environment - officially opened. The day was marked by opening remarks from the President followed by representatives of some UN groups and other major ones, including: 1. The importance of multilateralism for the humanity and the environment. 2. The need for delegates to unite in their efforts to tackle the triple planetary crisis and craft strong resolutions. 3. The urge for a change of course as nature is declining. 4. Welcoming the adoption of strategic frameworks and treaties such as the GBF (biodiversity), the GFC (chemicals), UNCLOS (sea), the BBNJ (marine areas beyond national jurisdiction) and the plastic treaty INC. 5. The challenge of desertification, deforestation and land degradation to addressing the triple planetary crisis. 6. The need for more synergistic action to address the triple planetary crisis. 7. The need for compromise on important issues, incl. the vulnerability of coastal ecosystems and the ocean. 8. The urgency for a strong ministerial declaration since none of the UNEA-6 resolutions to date have been agreed to (with some not even having completed the first reading at OECPR). 9. The common but differentiated responsibilities. 10. Calls for Russia to withdraw its troops in Ukraine. 11. Caution against one-sided solutions and market-based approaches that exacerbate other environmental challenges and deepen inequalities. Tomorrow (Tuesday 27th), the programme will include items such as: - Launch of the Business and Industry Major Group Beacon Projects Report 2024; - Role of Civil Society in multilateral actions in addressing the triple planetary crisis; - Unlocking synergies in Africa's water-energy-food-ecosystems nexus; - Eco-feminine forces shaping sustainable horizons for environmental harmony; - Human-based solution to address nature crisis; and - Fair trade and green MSMEs. #environment #environmentalprotection #multilateralism #sustainability

The European Green Deal will have a brighter future with the Just Transition (though it could have been called Fair Transition). Thanks Marek Hudon for these lines of thinking.
Naive? Optimistic? What if most of the ingredients were already there to make the transition fair... let's mobilize them much more! ! I am honored to have had two great opportunities to share this view at European level.. in ten days. Two very special events: - a large audience at the European Conference for a Just Transition within the framework of the Belgian Presidency of the Council of the European Union (thank you Minister Khattabi for the invitation!) - an expert committee, the European technical group on national energy and climate plans (NECP) in the presence of all member states and managed by the European Commission. In both cases, I was impressed by the interest from European actors on the topic. Everyone agrees that there will be no fair ecological transition without Europe! With my co-Chair of the Belgian High Committee for A Just Transition, Bea Cantillon, we propose three roles for Europe. Those of: 1. Guarantor: Strengthening social rights (for example, a directive on minimum income) 2. Guide: Enhancing social monitoring of ecological policies and ecological monitoring of social policies 3. Supporter: Making the distribution of funds more conditional on ecological and social criteria What does this mean concretely? Most often, it means amplifying what is already present! Le met highlight for you three priorities: 1. Including environmental objectives or policies in social monitoring (for example, indicators on energy precarity or measuring the impact of climate policies on poverty and social exclusion). 2. Including social objectives/policies in climate assessment. An example? It is urgent to better integrate the framework of just transition into national energy and climate plans (NECP). These NECPs are pivotal in European debates, it is thus essential that the "just transition" dimension becomes the rule rather than the exception, making them "mainstream." 3. Strengthening the focus on just transition in territorial just transition plans. Again, "territorial just transition plans" exist... but the just transition dimension is currently insufficient. This reflection obviously builds on the work of the High-Level Committee for a Just Transition that we published in November 2023! Today we see the difficulties in implementing new tools at the European level (CSDD, nature restoration law, etc.), these are obviously needed but building on European tools, strengthening them, is also an important and complementary avenue. Times are tough for those who want societal changes, but let's not give up! #justtransition #environmentaljustice #sustainability Emmanuel MOSSAY Aurore Fransolet

Renewable Energy - ESG -LCA- CSR- Sustainability Systems Strategies - project manager and policy specialist
Now more than ever before, the fate of the planets inhabitability, climate, biodiversity and ecosystems services hangs in the balance. Therefore, every vote, in every election, in every country needs to be for candidates that support climate actions and creating a nature positive circular and inclusive wellbeing economy. "In June 2024, EU citizens will not only elect the new European Parliament and chart the way to the formation of the next European Commission, but also lay the foundations for the future of the EU and its global role well into the next decade. Decisive actions must be taken in the EU and globally before 2030 to avoid irreversible environmental tipping points and to keep a chance of achieving global goals, including the 2030 Agenda with its Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the Paris Climate Agreement." " Launching January 25th, SDSN will launch the 5th edition of the Europe Sustainable Development Report (ESDR) which tracks annually since 2019 the performance of all EU member states and partner countries on the SDGs and is co-designed with civil society.
