I am interviewing the speakers here (Christina Lenart and Gustavo Maldonado-Gil) for an upcoming Grimshaw Cities podcast on their comparative research into social housing and city structure in Vienna and London. The overall series is called 'The Intelligent City' which in my head is partly about cities being more and more data-driven (and responsive: for me, crucial as 'smart cities' require smart and responsive city governance) and partly about cities being intelligent in providing those assets and amenities which make the city more inclusive, sustainable and liveable: the city for all. That means providing the range of housing tenures and supply to meet both need and demand. In that vision, enough sub market rental, enabled in various forms by government intervention and support (public housing directly provided by government/councils and social housing, enabled by community housing providers) must be a core city asset. (I'm also in favour of forms of low cost home-ownership enabled by governments: for a separate post). So interviewing these two academics was a no brainer as they bring everything together: data, policy, planning, built form and city morphology so as to understand what works best where in terms of social/public housing. I add(new paragraph): we've got a number of the podcasts in the can after tonight and will start broad/narrow-casting them shortly. I believe the next one with Tom Riordan CBE CEO of Leeds City Council will be out on 15 May and then we will return to a new podcast once every 3-4 weeks for the rest of the year. #socialhousing #publichousing #homesforall

It's been five years since the York Central masterplan successfully gained planning consent, and it's a project that we at Aberfield are immensely proud to have played a key role in alongside our partners, Homes England, City of York Council, Network Rail and the National Railway Museum. We delivered the communications and engagement across the project from access consultations and the final masterplan 'Festival of York Central' consultation, through branding, stakeholder engagement, PR, social and issues management. It was also the start of our ongoing journey with transformational schemes in York, which includes working with York Minster (Chapter of York) on the adoption of its Neighbourhood Plan, the first of its kind to be used to map the future care of a cathedral or heritage estate, and the innovative regeneration of Coney Street Riverside by the Helmsley Group. We love working on projects like these for the lasting impact they deliver to communities. So it's great to see the plans coming forward for York Central from McLaren Property | Living | Regeneration and Arlington Real Estate and see how that masterplan is now becoming a physical reality in the city. It's now critical that strategic communications plays a further role in the next phase of York Central's development, so its importance and significance to the city, the region and the North isn't overlooked. If you want to learn more about the work we did on York Central you can see a case study here ⬇️ https://lnkd.in/g4rpw9F6 #Regeneration #stakeholderengagement #publicrelations #builtenvironment
We were thrilled to welcome the Leader of City of York Council, Claire Douglas, and David Skaith, the first Mayor of York and North Yorkshire Combined Authority, to the York Central development site today. Their visit underscored the immense potential of this 45-hectare regeneration project site to bring a vibrant new dimension to our historic city. York Central is set to become a beacon of cultural and economic growth by transforming underused land into a vibrant and distinctive mix of: 🏡 residential neighbourhoods 🎨 cultural spaces 🌳 public realm 🏢 and a high-quality commercial core All in the heart of one of the UK’s desirable cities. This project will drive inward investment, create affordable housing and enhance transport connectivity - all of which are crucial for regional empowerment. Strong political leadership is crucial to realising this ambitious vision and we are grateful for the support and leadership of Claire and David as we work together to make York Central a reality. 🤝 #YorkCentral #YorkDevelopment #UrbanTransformation #CulturalGrowth #EconomicDevelopment #PoliticalLeadership #YorkshirePowerhouse

ATTN: Town Planners & City Elected Office Holders - Parisian lessons in social and commercial planning to keep neighbourhoods truly "local." Even with a 6 year waiting list, 25% of Paris residents live in City Hall municipal social housing, including that repurposed from former government ministry buildings, to achieve "mixité sociale" (residents from a broad cross-section of society) policy which has built or renovated 82,000 apartments over the last 30 years. Some principal elected political office holders want a goal of 60% public housing. Paris City Hall's real estate subsidiaries also ensures the 19% of city shops it owns are part of its "petits commerces" policy to keep the neighbourhoods' fine grain of truly local, small businesses.
