This year, inspired by the power of the first-ever IUCN Africa Protected Areas Congress held in 2022, IUCN will host one Africa Conservation Forum (ACF) combining all three sub-regions. About 500 representatives of Union constituents, partners and supporters will gather for the five-day event in Nairobi, Kenya. The ACF is one of the leading platforms for sharing knowledge, building partnerships, and connecting key stakeholders in nature and biodiversity #conservation from different regions. Co-organised with the National Committee of IUCN Members in Kenya in cooperation with the Government of Kenya through the Ministry of Tourism and Wildlife, the ACF aims to evaluate conservation progress, revisit priority goals and propose strategic directions for Africa’s key stakeholders to best address challenges concerning the environment and biodiversity over the next 20 years. Human-wildlife conflict and coexistence impacts both biodiversity conservation and sustainable development. Perceptions of the seriousness of human-wildlife conflict are most pronounced in Africa. A Global Wildlife Program (GWP) survey of governments found that 73% of responding countries in Africa agreed human-wildlife conflict is a major and serious concern, and 79% agreed that human-wildlife conflict is increasing.  The GWP, funded by the Global Environment Facility and led by The World Bank Bank, in partnership with the Elephant Protection Initiative Foundation (EPIF) organized a regional, technical workshop on human-elephant conflict from May 8 to May 9, 2024, in Nairobi, Kenya. The IUCN #AfricaConservationForum2024 in Nairobi highlighted the importance of building resilience in Africa’s critical ecosystems. While speaking on a panel addressing the role of private sector in enhancing conservation, I discussed how integrating business and conservation can bridge the gap between business interests of economic viability and conservation efforts. I have had a lifelong passion for wildlife and supported conservation efforts in Kenya through the Mount Kenya Wildlife Conservancy and my experiences points to the fact that successful collaboration requires more than policies and incentives that encourage businesses to integrate conservation into their core strategies. Establishing clear, enforceable regulations is also essential to create a supportive environment for sustainable practices. By partnering with stakeholders across sectors, we can scale efforts, share risks, and innovate for sustainable solutions. I am filled with hope and determination for the future of conservation in Africa! I am more committed than ever to advancing the intersection of business and conservation. Increased private investment will unlock impactful conservation initiatives across Africa. In 2022 the Nottawasaga Institute (NI) was asked to develop a youth engagement strategy for the Kenya Wildlife Conservancies Association (KWCA). This strategy aims at addressing the crucial role of #youthengagement in conservancy sustainability and provides a framework for integrating and mainstreaming youth into #conservancy activities. https://lnkd.in/dGnMdkWM

Bengal florican (Houbaropsis bengalensis) is commonly found in Nepal, India, Cambodia, and Vietnam. Unfortunately, the bird’s population has been gradually decreasing due to habitat loss and lack of protection, among other factors. The Government of Nepal launched an action plan to protect the bird’s population in the country. How will the Bengal Florican Conservation Action Plan be implemented? Chimpanzees play a crucial role in maintaining forest health and contribute to human well-being through income-generating projects like tourism. This year’s #WorldChimpanzeeDay is a reminder to intensify our conservation and #sustainabledevelopment efforts to protect these species and restore the natural ecosystems they inhabit. In the forest belt of #Africa, spanning from Senegal to western Tanzania, there are four subspecies of chimpanzees: Western, Nigeria-Cameroon, Central, and Eastern. They live in diverse environments, from rainforests to dry savannas and cultivated landscapes dominated by oil palm. The African Wildlife Foundation is actively conserving these chimpanzees with major programs in Cameroon, the DRC, and Uganda. Eco-guards in Bili-Uere (DRC) and Dja and Campo Ma’an (Cameroon) patrol to protect these animals and their habitats. This road leading to one of the well furnished lodges in remote Namibia is one that drives livelihood, employment and growth in the locality. It also helps generate several economic returns to Namibia through ecotourism ventures. Conservation and wildlife is one important driving force here. These gentle giants are not only icons of the African wilderness but also vital contributors to their ecosystems. However, they are in grave danger due to habitat loss and the illegal ivory trade. 🌿 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗴𝗲: Habitat loss is pushing these incredible creatures into ever-shrinking spaces. As human settlements expand and natural habitats dwindle, elephants often come into conflict with local communities, leading to negative consequences for both humans and elephants. Moreover, the illegal ivory trade continues to pose a significant threat, driving poaching and putting these magnificent animals on the brink of extinction. 🦸♂️ 𝗢𝘂𝗿 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗺𝗶𝘁𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁: At Planet Lodges, we've taken up the mantle of conservation with our #DoOneThingToday campaign.
