🌱 Organic Agriculture and Agroecology Conference Highlights: August 28-29, 2024 🌱
Last week, we had the privilege of joining a panel discussion at the Organic Agriculture and Agroecology Conference, representing the position of agroecological farming in Namibia. Our conversations centered around the core of our mission: Why choose Agroecology & Organic Agriculture? What other approach surpasses a holistic one, that connects science, ecology, economy and society for a long run?
We discussed how to better support small to medium-scale organic and agroecological farmers, who face unique challenges due to the labor, knowledge & skill intensive nature of these methods. Emphasis was placed on enhancing existing support structures and acknowledging the pivotal role of women, who by default lead the informal markets with low income and thus deserve more recognition and support to thrive.
Key Takeaways:
🌍 Broader Vision: There is a danger of reducing Agroecology and organic to only field-based technicalities, but it is more than that, as it goes down to democracy and giving rights to communities to design own sustainable food systems.
🎯 Realistic Goals: Advising farmers to pursue manageable production goals over overly ambitious ones is crucial.
🌐 Integrating Sectors (academia, retail, market, logististic) & stakeholders: Involving Namibia’s tourism sector in produce offtake could open new markets for organic products. Equally crucial is enhancing coordination and collaboration among grassroots-level development stakeholders."
🔬 Diverse Research: A shift from a single-view on conventional agriculture to a more diverse research focus is essential for addressing real industry problems.
🔍 Industry Awareness: It is very important for every agricultural actor to understand the industry’s current situation, vision, challenges, and opportunities across the supply value chain.
