BONE HEALTH VIA “gut-immune axis" MODULATION In recent years, there has been a worrying increase in the incidence of bone diseases globally. Ankylosing spondylitis, osteoporosis, rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, and fractures alone impact an estimated 1.71 billion people worldwide. The term “gut microbiota” (GM) refers to the diverse population of microorganisms that live in the gut, including bacteria, fungi, viruses, protozoa, and archaea. GM has a mutualistic relationship with the host organism and is essential in preserving gut health. The host's gastrointestinal tract provides a nutrient-rich environment, which is one of the main drivers of this mutualistic relationship. The gut microbiota (GM) plays a crucial role in interacting with the host through the synthesis of a wide range of metabolites called gut-associated metabolites (GAMs), which originate from external dietary substrates or endogenous host compounds. Many metabolic disorders have been linked to alterations in the activity and composition of the gut microbiota. The development of metabolic diseases has been linked to certain microbiota-derived metabolites, such as branched-chain amino acids (BCAAs), bile acids (BA), short-chain fatty acids(SCFAs), tryptophan, trimethylamine N-oxide (TMAO), polyamines and indole derivatives. Modulation of the gut microbiota by biotics (pre-, pro-, and post-biotics) presents a promising avenue for therapeutic intervention. Biotics selectively promote the growth of beneficial gut bacteria, thereby enhancing the production of GAMs with potential beneficial effects on bone metabolism. S. Yadav, L. Sapra, and R.K. Short Chain Fatty Acids (SCFA) like Propionate and Butyrate are a function of healthy/balanced gut bacteria. The levels of SCFA produced by the microbiome affect gut health and can contribute to the development of several diseases 👉🏽 including kidney disease. The study demonstrated that: 1️⃣ levels of propionate and butyrate in stool were lower in CKD patients and gradually reduced as the disease progresse 2️⃣ "Early administration of these SCFAs prevents disease advancement in a pre-clinical model of acute renal damage, demonstrating their therapeutic potential independently of the gut microbiota." ✨️ This is a major step in better understanding the role of applying an Integrative lense in renal care by supporting gut health and mucrobiome balance as a foundation in protecting kidney health. Vitamin B12 in cellular reprogramming and tissue regeneration Vitamin B12 is a well-known micronutrient that has long been acknowledged for its essential role in maintaining nerve function, supporting red blood cell production, and facilitating DNA synthesis, all vital processes for overall health. Researchers have now revealed that vitamin B12 also plays a pivotal role in cellular reprogramming and tissue regeneration. The findings have been published in the journal Nature Metabolism. The research was focused on an experimental process known as cellular reprogramming which is thought to mimic the early phases of tissue repair. The team found that cellular reprogramming in mice consumes large amounts of vitamin B12. Indeed, the depletion of vitamin B12 becomes a limiting factor that delays and impairs some aspects of the reprogramming process. #citation New research sheds light on the impact of aspirin on gut health. 🌟 A study on Cell Host & Microbe from The First Affiliated Hospital of Xi'an Jiaotong University using clinical cohorts and mouse models found that aspirin suppresses the growth of a specific gut microbe, Parabacteroides goldsteinii. Supplementing mice with this microbe or its metabolite, 7-keto-lithocholic acid (7-keto-LCA), reduced aspirin-induced damage to the intestinal barrier. Findings suggest that 7-keto-LCA promotes intestinal epithelium repair by suppressing signaling through the farnesoid X receptor (FXR), highlighting the complex interplay between aspirin, gut microbiota, and gastrointestinal homeostasis. A new study in Diabetology & Metabolic Syndrome has investigated the link between metabolic syndrome and the risk of developing primary open-angle glaucoma, a condition characterized by the gradual loss of retinal ganglion cells and optic nerve degeneration, eventually leading to irreversible vision loss. Analyzing data from the 2019-2021 Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, encompassing 11,499 adults aged 19 years and above, the researchers categorized participants into groups based on the presence or absence of metabolic syndrome. Findings revealed a notable dose-response relationship between the number of metabolic syndrome components a person had and their risk of developing primary open-angle glaucoma. Consequently, the study suggests that people with metabolic syndrome, who are at a heightened risk of primary open-angle glaucoma, especially normal-tension glaucoma, should undergo comprehensive ophthalmological evaluations as a preventive measure. — Lee, JH., Kwon, YJ., Kim, S.J. et al. Psoriasis Severity Linked to Imbalance in Skin Microbiome A new study published in Lancet has revealed a connection between the severity of psoriasis and imbalances in the skin microbiome. Researchers found that patients with severe psoriasis have a disrupted skin microbiome, characterised by decreased diversity and an overabundance of certain harmful bacteria. This imbalance, known as dysbiosis, can worsen inflammation and exacerbate psoriasis symptoms. The findings suggest that targeting the skin microbiome through treatments like probiotics could potentially alleviate psoriasis symptoms and improve patient outcomes.
