On July 19-20, 1848, the Seneca Falls Convention launched the women's rights movement. As we honor this milestone, it's vital to acknowledge its exclusion of women of color, highlighting the need for intersectionality in our pursuit of gender equality. Today is International Women's Day of Women's History Month where we honor how LGBTQ women are driving innovation and investment. Research has proven that when women are actively involved in financial decisions that impact them and their future, everyone benefits. In fact, almost 90% of women believe that money can be a tool to help them fulfill their life's purpose. This Women's History Month, and every month, we strive to empower LGBTQ+ women on their path to greater purpose and support them in reaching their goals. This Women’s History Month, we are celebrating alongside our LGBTQ+ community with pride, joy, and so much love 🧡 May this Women’s History Month be an opportunity for us all to pay tribute to the strength, resilience and diversity of ALL women across every spectrum, orientation and background. May it also be a reminder that the fight for women’s rights and gender equality is far from over. While we have seen unprecedented progress made toward Title IX and the right to vote, many across the world — including trans women — continue to face a system of oppression deeply rooted in hatred, misogyny, and transphobia. As the fight for gender justice enters a new chapter, one with a commitment to intersectionality and inclusivity, let’s show up together to speak out on inequality and celebrate the incredible impact that so many women changemakers, glass-ceiling breakers, and boundary pushers have had on LGBTQ+ history and community.

The federal government is supporting the inclusion of Black and LGBTQ individuals in Canada's workplace equity laws. Women aren't just a checkbox in workplace equity; they're the driving force behind real change. It's time to amplify their diverse voices, recognize intersectional challenges faced by Black Women, Indigenous women and women of colour and intensify efforts for substantive equality. For International Women’s Day, we are amplifying a report from McKinsey & Company that offers an intersectional look at the specific biases and barriers faced by Asian, Black, Latina, and LGBTQ+ women and women with disabilities, and provides clear guidelines that organizations can implement to make meaningful progress toward gender equality and equity.

As Pride Month draws to a close, let’s reflect on Peppermint's powerful reminder: "Diversity and inclusion can't be transactional and superficial." Much like the fight for gender equality, it’s not limited to just one month of the year. Peppermint emphasizes the importance of genuinely understanding the needs and desires of the entire community. There’s so much that we can all learn from really seeing and listening to people who live and love right across the LGBTQIA+ spectrum. One thing that’s particularly appropriate in #LesbianVisibilityWeek is that women and non-binary people are often overlooked and underrepresented here too. 💥Thanks Polly Shute Raga D'silva and OUTSpokenSpeakers for the brilliant work you do to address this. A lot of my research and work at The Others & Me starts from recognising and then addressing how, as a society, our default-male bias impacts what we do. Centuries of social conditioning, myth and misinformation have made it that way. 💡Some are surprised to learn that the same thing often happens within the LGBTQIA+ community too. For instance, Pride events and LGBTQIA+ spaces often centre gay men much more than women. Of course, it’s not a competition. That kind of zero-sum game thinking damages all of us. 🌟 So let’s keep asking ‘who and what am I missing?’ 🌟 Let’s keep thinking ‘and’, not ‘or’. 🌟 And let’s keep exploring beyond simple binaries, embracing nuance in all kinds of ways. That way, we can build businesses, brands, products and services that work better for all of us.
