Did you know that only 55% of females who rupture their ACL return to sport? While elite female athletes tend to have more favorable outcomes, with most (~80%) returning to the same level of pre-injury participation, it is estimated that one in four will eventually re-rupture their ACL. Among players who returned to soccer, almost 70% reported a new knee injury, with a **2- to 5-**fold higher risk of any new knee injury and knee surgery than healthy players. Around 40% of female players who sustained an ACL injury reported a new ACL injury 5 to 10 years following the initial injury. While there is a lot of complexity surrounding ACL injury in women's sport, two of the low-hanging fruit that could contribute to improving the current statistics are: 1. Objective return-to-sport testing. 2. A structured strength and conditioning program designed to maintain excellent function once rehabilitation has been completed. #aclinjury #aclprevention #aclrehab #kneeinjury #returntosport #FIFAWomensWorldCup2023 Image Credit: Getty Images - Jose Breton
