As London’s skyline evolves, the question remains: should we build new or renew? Rising construction costs and sustainability concerns, including increased awareness of embodied carbon, have shifted the focus toward repurposing existing towers. However, the challenge lies in balancing these factors with tenant demands for modern, flexible, and amenity-rich spaces. In an in-depth article for Building Magazine, we explore the challenges and opportunities of both approaches. Thank you to Ramboll, Stanhope PLC and the City of London Corporation, our fellow collaborators on this article. Five Sustainable construction & renovation facts 1. Buildings are responsible for 38% of global energy-related carbon emissions and 50% of all extracted materials. 2. BUILD UPON2 is a project coordinated by Green Building Council España (GBCE) which aimed to give cities across Europe the tools to unlock the potential of building renovation in order to accelerate the journey to net zero in 2050. 3. Choosing to refurbish an existing building over new build construction can save 50-75% of time when it comes to pre-contract planning and obtaining planning permission. 4. The EDGE in Amsterdam is often considered the world’s greenest office building, featuring 65,000 square feet of solar panels, a north-facing façade that is 70% glass, and locally sourced materials that will help save an estimated 42 million kilograms of CO2 over a ten-year period. 5. The US sustainable construction materials market is projected to be worth around USD 452.64 billion by 2033. #Sustainability #Facts #Construction

LEED Certification (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) is a globally recognized standard for sustainable building practices. It focuses on energy efficiency, water conservation, indoor environmental quality, and materials sustainability. Achieving Green LEED Certification demonstrates a commitment to reducing environmental impact while enhancing occupant health and comfort. With LEED Environmental Certification, buildings are rated across different levels based on their sustainability performance. This certification is a key step toward creating eco-friendly spaces that align with global green building standards. https://lnkd.in/ez5zmxF4 #leedcertification #greenleedcertification #leedenvironmentalcertification

Wondering when to involve a sustainable building specialist? Many overlook the benefits of early involvement, especially during RIBA stages 0-2, where integrating sustainability can yield substantial long-term cost savings. For instance, designing for a better building orientation and choosing efficient materials can lower heating and cooling bills over time. Plus, thinking about things like solar panels from the beginning can cut electricity costs and make your building more sustainable. How do we know this? Because #WeKnowNetZero. Newark & Sherwood District Council engaged us early during the construction of their new office space, in 2013. This allowed us to recommend increasing floor-to-ceiling height, enhancing natural light and air circulation, achieving long-term cost savings, improving user experience, and securing an EPC rating of B, exceeding the RIBA 2030 Challenge by 25%. Is your redevelopment or construction project working towards attaining BREEAM credits or in the RIBA stage 2 pre-planning phase? If so, you may not be aware that prior to works starting or submitting your planning application, a pre-demolition or pre-redevlopment audit will be required for the purpose of promoting resource efficiency in diverting construction waste from landfill. The audits are a key part of contributing to a circular economy using principles that consider a more sustainable way of building design and construction, placing more importance on embodied carbon reduction and sustainable resource management. In practice, this can include a light refurbishment of a commercial office building or be more significant like retaining a building’s steel structure during construction. However large your project, get in touch with us at Revive to discuss your circular economy requirements. #breeam #sustainability #circulareconomy #projectmanagement #greaterlondonauthority #construction

📣 Let's Dive into Green Building Certifications! 📣 Green building certifications are at the forefront of #sustainability and eco-friendly #architecture. Today, we'll answer some of the most common questions about these #certifications, including what they mean, why they matter, and how you can achieve them for your #projects. Q: What are green building certifications, and why are they important? A: Green building certifications are standards that evaluate and recognize sustainable construction and design practices. These certifications, such as LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design), Green Globes, and BREEAM (Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method), play a crucial role in promoting environmentally responsible #buildings that are energy-efficient, resource-conscious, and designed to enhance occupant health and well-being. Q: What are the key differences between LEED, Green Globes, and BREEAM? A: LEED is the most well-known certification in the U.S., focusing on areas like water efficiency, energy use, sustainable sites, and indoor environmental quality. Green Globes offers a flexible approach with an emphasis on energy performance and life-cycle analysis. BREEAM, widely used in Europe, evaluates sustainability across a broad range of categories, including health and well-being, energy, and transportation. Q: How can projects achieve these certifications? A: Achieving green building certification requires meeting specific #criteria set by each certification program. This typically involves an initial assessment, incorporating sustainable #design #strategies, and documenting the entire process. LEED, for example, awards points for various sustainable practices, while Green Globes allows for a customized path to sustainability based on project goals. We at GRN Vision specialize in guiding projects through the complex process of achieving green building certifications. Our expertise ensures your project meets or exceeds sustainability requirements, providing a clear path to success. Ready to bring sustainability into your next project?
