David’s area has responsibility for the development and implementation of most aspects of policy in relation to the Supply of Housing in tenures other than social housing, as well as the design and implementation of a programme of strategies aimed at improving housing supply. Work that Housing Supply Policy is responsible for includes: role and regulation of the private rented sector, affordable housing, shared neighbourhoods under Together: Building United Communities (TBUC), homelessness, housing supply across all tenures, and affordable warmth scheme. David will set the context for this discussion by providing an overview of the steps which have been taken by the Department over the last 10 years to make the Private Rented Sector a safer and more sustainable sector, and provide an overview of the Department’s plans to further reform the private sector in future. Across the global North and South, this global housing crisis has become a priority among a growing number of civil society organisations, as well as across policy, finance and philanthropy. IIED and World Habitat are partnering with community-led housing champions and housing justice movements to ensure that policymakers, financiers and philanthropists discover, understand and engage with community-led housing as a key policy tool in the provision of housing. #cities #CommunityLed #housing

There is a continued urgency to address homelessness and housing stress in Australia for all cohorts. Youth who experience homelessness are particularly vulnerable to the effects of housing instability and insecurity. This has wide ranging impacts on the Australian community and economy. This Housing All Australians report has found that every $1 the Australian community invests in social and affordable housing for youth will deliver $2.6 in benefits. This rate of return is comparable to, or better than, those achieved in many other major Australian infrastructure investments. For too long, public housing authorities and other housing providers have had the discretion to deny housing to people based on their past convictions—often with a disproportionate impact on communities of color. This practice not only undermines the principles of fairness and justice but also perpetuates the cycle of poverty and marginalization. The proposed HUD regulations aim to ensure that a conviction history is not an automatic disqualifier for subsidized housing. Instead of a blanket exclusion, the new rules would require an individualized review process. This process will consider the nature and severity of an individual’s conviction and evaluate their current circumstances and contributions to society. Because livery, poverty, homelessness, incarceration and desperate measures are becoming the only industry available option for our high school and college graduates in some communities. Consideration of abandoned buildings, storefronts, projects and programs for learning as adults might save our whole country. This is an idea to start initiating driving lessons for commuting, employment and aside work as vocation or necessity to help families. Garages as education, loaned vehicles and alike may open up economy but realize vehicle expenses need coverage ~ hence addressing the maintenance, usage and importance of gassing up, finding affordable gas prices and offering lessons regularly by us is essential!?

🏡 This #RuralHousingWeek is one year since Commonweal joined the #RuralHomelessnessCounts Coalition. Commonweal is pleased to fund and support English Rural's feasibility study investigating how a Housing First model of housing and intensive support could operate in rural areas, set to launch by autumn. 🔎 The research aims to identify how existing Housing First projects can be adapted to address the specific challenges that rural communities face, including limited access to services. 📈 Due to high house prices and a shortage of affordable housing in rural areas, there has been a surge in rural homelessness, with a 40% rise in the last five years. 🏠 We endorse ambitious targets for social and affordable housing. (Post 1/6 unpacking our submission to the Draft Shaping SEQ Plan). We endorse targets in the draft plan at 20% of new homes in SEQ being social and affordable housing and propose a minimum of at least 10% target for social housing to address declining investment since the early 1990s (as identified in the draft plan). Government investment in affordable housing should also ensure the investment delivers affordable housing in perpetuity, which is best delivered through community housing providers (CHPs). Programs of delivering affordable housing should avoid time-limited subsidies because it forces future risks of homelessness for vulnerable households (like the impacts we have seen with the winding up of the NRAS program).
