It is World Duchenne Awareness Day today, a global day aiming to raise awareness for those affected by Duchenne and Becker Muscular Dystrophy. The theme for this year's awareness day is 'breaking barriers'. This is a campaign that is close to our hearts, as one of the first pieces of bathroom equipment we designed and built - the ABW height adjustable washbasin - was developed with Muscular Dystrophy UK in the 1990s to address the specific needs of people living with degenerative and changing muscular conditions such as Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy. Many of the washbasin's features - such as weight bearing basin surround, levered taps and handset controls - were incorporated to support changing needs and enable as much independent washing as possible, for as long as possible. This design has been further developed over the years, and was also used as the basis for our ABW-CP Washbasin, which is used in Changing Places Toilets across the UK. Video No.1: Sharing 2 videos today from my YouTube Channel showing how complex the MindScent® Smell.Discover.Connect kits are to assemble and manufacturing costs were mind boggling! The video was taken just a few days before the word COVID became a household word where clients of Abilis 🥰 (a non-profit servicing people with developmental disabilities such as autism) were hired to assemble 25 kits. The next video I'll share today will show the line up and insertion of the 20 distinctive scents (the smells of chocolate, maple syrup, mint, watermelon etc.,) into the kits. I did enjoy the experience of making this video for #raredisease Day. (Though I could have at least worn trousers that fitted correctly I suppose). I spend a lot of my spare time writing and talking about #kallmann syndrome. For the most part I enjoy the interaction with fellow patients and raising awareness of the condition. She was in the middle of a PhD program while also running her online business at the time, MVMT Matters. In this follow-up discussion, a lot has happened and Shauna was kind enough to share her story. Shauna’s PhD program didn’t go quite as expected and that is the story she shares. She goes into detail about the feelings of being left alone when she was struggling to figure out her next steps and how the support she thought she might have, just never came. We also discuss the process that Shauna went through to make the decision to no further pursue her PhD. There was a lot that went into that decision and gives great insight into a large decision like that. Thanks Shauna for sharing so much.
