Hanwha Aerospace - Land Systems Business Group’s multipurpose unmanned ground vehicle (UGV), the Arion-SMET, has completed a week-long field test conducted by the United States Marine Corps and US Army. This accomplishment marks a significant milestone for the robotic vehicle, positioning it as a potential contender in the global UGV market. The field tests were carried out as part of the Foreign Comparative Testing (FCT) run by the US Marine Corps Systems Command. Representatives from III Marine Expeditionary Force (III-MEF) and Army Combat Capabilities Development Command (DEVCOM), Ground Vehicle Systems Center (GVSC) also joined the testing held in Marine Corps Training Area Bellows (MCTAB), located on the eastern edge of Oahu, Hawaii, from December 14-22, 2023. This remarks the first instance of a South Korean UGV participating in the US Department of Defense FCT, a program designed to assess, evaluate, and verify cutting-edge technologies developed by defense contractors from the US allies, aimed at enhancing the defense capabilities of the US military. #Australia commits further $400m to Ghost Bat capability. The Australian Government has announced an extra $399 million investment to further develop the MQ-28A Ghost Bat. The Ghost Bat #uncrewed aircraft is a pathfinder for the integration of autonomous systems and artificial intelligence to create smart human-machine teams. It is the result of a collaboration between the Royal Australian Air Force and Boeing Australia. This funding commitment confirms that Australia is going ahead with the next stage of the program, including delivery of three Block 2 aircraft. Part of this funding is aimed at developing sensor and mission payloads, an integrated combat system and #autonomous systems.

The U.S. must leverage its ability to develop autonomous systems to extend this transition to #unmanned #warfare #underseas, investing in a fleet of unmanned underwater vehicles to complement traditional submarines and surface vessels. The geographical problem is one of scale. The Chinese military grossly outmatches Taiwanese capabilities. But if the U.S. can apply its combat power directly in and around the Taiwan Strait, then all of its mass will simply become a target, just as so many massed forces have been #swarmed by #unmanned #aerial #systems on Ukrainian battlefields. China’s objective will be to keep U.S. reconnaissance and strike assets as far away from the Taiwan Strait as possible — ideally, more than 1,000 kilometers out of combat range. Undersea capabilities will therefore prove decisive in this contest. Currently, the balance of forces remains in our and our allies’ favor if forces are properly integrated. But the balance has narrowed considerably in even just the last five years. This makes a Chinese assault on Taiwan more likely in the event of marginal strategic changes."
