Asian philanthropy is becoming more and more important globally, most obviously in terms of amount of donations, but also the approach and the ecosystem. How can we be partners in locally led development?   No doubt: real development will only be sustainable if it is owned and led by local actors. But how can we get there, and what does this imply for the role of donors and NGOs?   At a gathering of European philanthropic organizations convened by Philea - Philanthropy Europe Association in Brussels, we exchanged on approaches, shared concrete experiences and deliberated on how to jointly overcome barriers to Locally Led Development (LLD).   Let me share my personal five main conclusions and see how they resonate with you: 1.    We need to build partnerships with legitimate and value-aligned local actors who lead development initiatives that truly address local priorities. 2.    Co-invest together with local actors, including governments, private sector and local philanthropy. 3.    Arrange for time and resources to co-create a joint vision, objectives, accountability mechanisms and governance structures. 4.    Acknowledge and address power imbalances between donors and recipients as well as among local stakeholders. 5.    NGOs can serve as process facilitators, knowledge brokers (e.g. sharing best practices across countries) and trusted custodians of inclusive and sustainable development.
