A long post this one to share news of a new report authored by LDA Design and published by London Borough of Camden and Islington Council which finds that climate resilience and social #equity are driving best practice in the redesign of streets and highways, making them safer, healthier and addressing unequal access. For too long, traffic movement and parking have been prioritised above quality of place and #wellbeing. ‘Highways Greening – Best Practice and Lessons Learnt’ https://lnkd.in/e8aRBPWF finds that the tide is turning. The report draws on #Camden and #Islington’s experience of jointly delivering a #HighwaysGreeningAccelerator programme, targeting the areas of greatest #community need. It also highlights best practice in the #planning, #design and #delivery of #greeninfrastructure on highways and streets around the UK and in #Vancouver, #Antwerp and #Lyon. Support came from the Department for Housing & Communities (now the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government), the National Trust, The National Lottery Heritage Fund and the Mayor of London. Full story here ➡ https://lnkd.in/egVHjXNW Report here ➡ https://lnkd.in/e8aRBPWF 💬 Sophie Thompson, a director and #publicrealm lead at LDA Design said: “This report aims to educate and inspire those involved in planning, designing, and delivering public realm. Even small street greening projects can provide significant benefits. It is also clear that when projects are interdisciplinary and prioritise the #community, they maximise benefits in #biodiversity, flood resilience, active travel, play and sociability.” You can find the full set of guidance documents from the Accelerator programme on the Urban Design Learning (UDL) website: https://lnkd.in/eyuDxVRG A big thank you to all the people and organisations that contributed to the training sessions and case studies, including Arup Robert Bray Associates Greater London Authority Enfield Council City of London Corporation Erect Architecture SMALLWOOD ARCHITECTS LTD Spring Gardens Nursery SHAPE Architecture Streets Ahead Cityscapes Cardiff Council Urban Movement City of Vancouver Stad Antwerpen Métropole de Lyon 👏 Great work by LDA Design's Sophie Thompson Ellie Buckell Stella Bland and Lee White. Thanks Clare for this post. Just shows what’s possible with an engaged Highways department and Council. Bristol Urban Greening should be encouraged by this success and look forward to working with you and the rest of the group to see what we can achieve…
