"Death by papercuts" may sound like an flagrant fear-mongering, and I can say plainly that in most situations, companies don't actually die as a result of their inefficiencies. However, there is a cycle that can be all-consuming if the proper methods to mitigate paper cuts aren't given attention before reaching a critical mass. I can't tell you how much I used to dread "forced fun." Losing hours of my life with no ROI with the additional pressure of needing to cajole my team into participating. Insult on top of injury. Now we get to do things differently. "Team building" always needs a business reason so participants can understand why they are being asked to take time away from the work they need to get done and invest it into time with their colleagues. This business reason informs the tone and content of our time together and participants always get a say in how that time is spent. Not everyone will agree on what constitutes "fun," and so a skilled designer and facilitator are needed to balance the needs and wants for the activities. It takes a lot of strategic thought and preparation, but the outcome is worth it - achieving a business objective AND coming out a more connected team. One week ago I was driving home from the Revenue Operations Alliance Summit and let me tell you how humbling it was connecting with others who struggled with the same things professionally. The last 2 companies I served were small groups striving for growth. A lot of orhanizations that have established and understand the need for RevOps professionals are typically middle and larger sized companies, but they are all struggling to keep up with their insanely fantastic and overwhelming growth. There needs to be a blend, the best of both worlds where you are building a RevOps team WHILE scaling, not as an afterthought. How do you make a business case for something "new" when the rest of your business is still operating like it would have 20+ years ago? 🤔 It's time to face the music. We want MORE as individuals and organizations. You invest in your personal health and needs by eating your greens and saving up in that 401K, but you're not likely as quick to jump into investing in the long term health of your company with the right structure growth plan because dollars are moving now. Last week at the summit we discussed the average tenure of a CRO is 18 months. EIGHTEEN MONTHS! When on average it takes about a year to get ramped and a thorough understanding of the business, industry, and market needs, many expect results and change immediately, but hate the impact to company culture that comes with a massive sudden shake up. RevOps is an investment in your business. A revenue operations team is designed to serve all revenue impacting arms of the organization. What other strategies are you using to connect sales, marketing, and product to establish the unit that truly is your revenue opportunity? Any of these branches can cause total misalignment and derailment in the business if they aren't in sync. It's time to weave better intentions into our organizations.
