Here are our top trends to watch. Short-Term Complications … The signs at the end of 2023 pointed to a likely fall in inflation, which many predicted would lead to cuts in interest rates… of course this hasn’t happened. Consequently, debt is still expensive leading to a more muted transaction environment. In the capital markets, there are some adjustments in pricing, but not a lot. The cost of financing is also one of the biggest challenges, particularly for repositioning's, the types of deals we go after,” said Tim Abram, managing director, Starwood Capital Group. We are dealing with some owners that actually have to sell good hotels to stop others from being defaulted or being taking back by the bank. It’s going to require interest rates to come down and the reversal of the office crisis. I’ve been fortunate to nab some pretty nifty speaking gigs over the last couple of months, including events in Turin, Tangiers, Cork, Milan, Mauritius and The Seychelles. Next up… Solihull! Looking forward to this one just as much as events further afield - having been born in the Midlands, it feels like a home-coming! And, it’s a punchy programme put together by the indefatigable Susie Ankrett! I’ll be using the latest version of my #MegaTrends_MicroLens keynote talk to flag a few new solutions to crunchy #futureofwork cunundrums, including a few global good practice carousels on creating high-energy, high-performance and high-care organisational cultures. I’ll also be touching on recent International Labour Organization events and last week’s World Employment Confederation-Europe / UNI Europa co-production that have provided unique insight into effective reskilling initiatives across Europe, with a specific focus on how local level partnerships can drive positive change. Next month’s gathering will be a great opportunity for taking stock of similar initiatives in the West Midlands. Of course, by July 11th we will have started a new chapter in British politics. I’ll use some of my past experience of working with government ministers and on government forums (as well on the European board of the WEC, a few years back) to review the public policy landscape around skills, productivity and inclusive labour markets. What political interventions are needed to support business growth and better skills-matching? What is working in other countries? And how can business leaders in the West Midlands influence the direction of travel by boosting voice and visibility? These are just one of the red-hot topics that I’ll covering in the green pastures of Solihull College next month. See you there!
