Transport for the North recently welcomed the publication of a recent Arup report commissioned by Manchester Airport, which sets out the economic potential of properly linking this international gateway to an integrated and more sustainable transport network 🚅 The Northern Powerhouse Rail network is a critical part our Strategic Transport Plan, and our plan recognises the economic potential of our region's global gateways 🌎 Our Director of Strategy, Analysis and Communications, Katie Day said: 🗣 "Transport for the North’s new Strategic Transport Plan recognises the role international connectivity plays in economic growth. This latest report shows the potential in Manchester Airport, as a critical asset to our region and beyond. With the right investment in strategic transport infrastructure and services for the North, we can enable stronger growth and even higher productivity, building on the region’s economic strengths and capabilities. The Northern Powerhouse Independent Economic Review, updated in 2023, underpins this latest report and the new Strategic Transport Plan and demonstrates that £118 more GVA is possible by 2050. Together, we can – and we will – transform the North." You can find the Manchester Airport report in the post below 👇
Political and business leaders back report showing how Manchester Airport can drive Northern growth and a rebalancing of the economy. A new report from Arup revealed what the full economic potential of the Airport would be if the right conditions were in place to unlock “transformational growth” across the North. MAG (Airports Group) CEO Ken O'Toole said: “A key question for the next UK government is how to not only maximise the potential of Manchester Airport, but also ensure all parts of the North benefit to the fullest extent possible. “Any government serious about rebalancing the country would want all major cities and towns to have fast and easy rail access to the world through their nearest international gateway – and here in the North that is Manchester Airport." 🚄 Transport Select Committee HS2 Hearing, 10th January 2024: Charting the Future from Manchester's Historic Tracks 🔵 Transport Select Committee Insights: The HS2 hearing, held on the approach to the 200-year anniversary of intercity railways, particularly resonated with Manchester's deep-rooted railway legacy, the cradle of the world's first intercity railway. Capacity and Comfort Reassessment: Concerns over a potential 20% reduction in rail capacity on routes, notably London to Manchester, cast a shadow on the modernisation efforts compared to the city's historic railway achievements. Extended Journey Times: The integration of HS2 trains onto existing tracks raises the prospect of longer travel times between Birmingham and Manchester, a departure from the high-speed goals initially paralleled with Manchester's pioneering rail spirit. Financial Challenges: The fiscal uncertainties surrounding the Euston Station extension highlight the complexities faced in realising ambitious modern rail projects, reminiscent of the challenges overcome by Manchester in its early railway days. 🔵 Reflecting on Manchester's Railway Heritage: As we evaluate the current state and future of HS2, Manchester's role as a trailblazer in rail innovation serves as a potent reminder of the transformative impact of railways. The city's journey from hosting the first intercity rail to being a part of HS2's vision underscores the need to maintain this pioneering momentum in rail development. 🔵 A Call for Thoughtful Innovation: Honouring nearly 200 years of UK rail history, it's crucial that we adapt to current challenges while upholding the spirit of innovation exemplified by Manchester's railway heritage. 🔵 Your Participation is Key: In this significant phase of UK rail history, your insights are invaluable. We encourage you to share your thoughts on how HS2 can navigate its current challenges while honouring the legacy of cities like Manchester, which have been pivotal in shaping rail travel. 🌐 #HS2 #TransportSelectCommittee #ManchesterRailLegacy #200YearsRail #FutureOfUKRailways

The Northern Transport Summit aligns with our Manifesto asks! ✈️ Last week, our Commercial Director, Andrew Clarke, participated in the Northern Transport Summit in Manchester. The summit's theme this year was ‘Connecting the North, Building Prosperity for All’ and we believe this deeply aligns with the BTA's mission. Our manifesto passionately advocates for investing in regional airports to bolster connectivity and prosperity. Efficient transportation is the lifeline of business travel and delays not only impact finances, but also productivity. The BTA are calling for better connectivity among regional airports, alongside strong rail and road networks. It's imperative that the Government prioritises support for regional airports to foster both growth and resilience. Read our full manifesto here: https://bit.ly/4aBEGst #YourBTA #NTS2024

It was fantastic to attend the Northern Transport Summit on Thursday hosted by one of our key clients, Manchester Airport Group. The level of ambition and vision outlined by the Metro Mayors is exactly what the North of England requires. They are really grabbing hold of the agenda, working together and learning from each other so that there is a consistent approach to government. We have already started to see the successful rollout of the Bee Network in Manchester by Andy Burnham. As a result, there is more challenge back to Government that the North will not accept sub par infrastructure, and more evidence based optioneering now done in the north by people who know the north. This is not about transport, it is about growth. Making opportunities more accessible to more people. Rail Stations as a driver for wider Place based regeneration was also a key theme that came from the Mayors, to further support the business case for how these benefits will reap benefits for their communities. To maximise this, the public and private sector will have to innovate so that we can deliver things like the Mass Transit system in West Yorkshire, an underground station at Piccadilly and the regeneration of the Liverpool Central Station area in the future.

🛤️ Shaping the Future of UK Transport: A Bold Vision for Connectivity and Growth by Juergen Maier 🚄🌍 I'm delighted to see the publication of Juergen Maier's Rail and Urban Transport Review. This comprehensive report outlines a bold, forward-thinking vision for a greener, more inclusive, and highly efficient transport infrastructure across the UK. 🇬🇧 The review’s emphasis on creating a long-term National Transport Strategy is precisely what the country needs to ensure that our transport networks are fit not just for the next five years, but for the next fifty. With ambitious targets, such as doubling rail’s share of journeys within a decade and accelerating project delivery timelines by 25%, this report lays out a clear roadmap for transforming how we connect our cities, stimulate economic growth, and achieve our decarbonisation goals. 🌱📈 I’m particularly enthused by the focus on harnessing public-private partnerships and enhancing devolution to empower local authorities, ensuring that every region of the UK benefits from this transformation. As someone passionate about sustainable development and innovation, I believe these recommendations will be pivotal in shaping a prosperous and connected future for all. 🤝💡 We need to seize this report and use it as a catalyst to work together to turn this bold vision into reality. The future of UK transport is not just about getting from A to B—it’s about building a resilient, sustainable, and thriving economy for everyone. 🚉💼 Jason Prince Juergen Maier CBE FRS FREng #TransportInnovation #Sustainability #Infrastructure #UKGrowth #FutureOfTransport

Debating the future of UK Rail at the George Bradshaw Address last week left me feeling positive about any challenges that may lie ahead. Why? Because, while visions for rail reform vary, one thing is certain: a strong railway is crucial for economic growth, community connectivity and climate goals. In keeping customer experience at our core, we continue to strive for better service. When COVID-19 dented commuter numbers, we adapted to the needs of passengers to allow growth in leisure travel, securing UK Rail’s future in public transport. Whether that future lies with successful public-private partnerships like Merseyrail, or with a flow of funds back to HM Treasury from successful operators like Greater Anglia, together we will forge a public transport system that is progressive, dynamic and sustainable.
