Someone asked me last week "𝘸𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘥𝘰 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘥𝘰" and I said "𝘐'𝘮 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘤𝘰-𝘧𝘰𝘶𝘯𝘥𝘦𝘳 𝘰𝘧 Amazing If, 𝘢 𝘤𝘰𝘮𝘱𝘢𝘯𝘺 𝘰𝘯 𝘢 𝘮𝘪𝘴𝘴𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝘵𝘰 𝘮𝘢𝘬𝘦 𝘴𝘲𝘶𝘪𝘨𝘨𝘭𝘺 𝘤𝘢𝘳𝘦𝘦𝘳𝘴 𝘣𝘦𝘵𝘵𝘦𝘳 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘺𝘰𝘯𝘦". There was a pause before they replied with... "𝘽𝙪𝙩 𝙬𝙝𝙖𝙩 𝙙𝙤 𝙮𝙤𝙪 𝙖𝙘𝙩𝙪𝙖𝙡𝙡𝙮 𝘿𝙊?" Fair question, so I thought I'd use the last 24 hours to track a 'day in the life' and perhaps find a better way to articulate the reality of my role (thanks to The Marketing Society, Medtronic, Google and Kennedys for featuring in my day!) I've shared it below in case you're curious, but I think the bigger insight is that 𝗶𝘁'𝘀 𝗵𝗲𝗹𝗽𝗳𝘂𝗹 𝘁𝗼 𝗺𝗮𝗸𝗲 𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗿𝗼𝗹𝗲𝘀 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗹 𝘁𝗼 𝗼𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿 𝗽𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗲. Clarity helps people spot what they might like to do more of and can inform their career conversations. And when teams with diverse roles talk about this together, greater understanding increases empathy ("𝘐 𝘥𝘪𝘥𝘯'𝘵 𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘭𝘪𝘴𝘦 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘸𝘦𝘳𝘦 𝘥𝘰𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘵") and efficiency ("𝘯𝘰𝘸 𝘐 𝘴𝘦𝘦, 𝘐 𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘬 𝘪𝘵 𝘮𝘪𝘨𝘩𝘵 𝘣𝘦 𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘯 𝘣𝘦𝘵𝘵𝘦𝘳 𝘪𝘧 𝘸𝘦..."). It's a work win-win. Perhaps 'day in my work life' is an activity to try out in your team....

Here's how to tell if you stayed at your company too long. When you start your new job, you'll hear things like: - You're the best! - How is your family? - It's great working with you! - We're thrilled you joined our team! - Let's collaborate to solve this problem. - We couldn't solve this issue without you. - The idea you presented was outstanding! - Let's discuss your career goals each month. This is the environment you experience when you are an appreciated member of a healthy team and company. Initially, it might feel as though you're living a dream. It's not a dream. You're simply receiving well-deserved and long-overdue recognition.

Stop letting your team take the first screening for you. If you let your BDR, AE, AM do the first decision process for you to “gather information” you are missing out on a lot. Here is why : The guy on your team doesn’t have the full company strategy overview. He has his head in the operational every day. He might be scared that an agency will replace his job. He doesn’t have the technical knowledge of your job to say if yes or no this or that service might be valuable. They have a target to reach and your side project is certainly not their priority. What if they are thinking of quitting next week and you are sending someone unmotivated to a meeting that could change the shape of the company's turnover? ... Yes, you got it, it’s too much of a big risk. Only you as a manager/decision maker can make the first screening or you will make mistakes It is your role to take on those tasks, not your team because only you have all the taking and ending.

In the initial decade of my corporate journey, I diligently adhered to the mantra of working hard with an unwavering focus on tasks. Yet, despite my dedication, I couldn't help but notice that many of my peers were ascending the career ladder at a swifter pace than I.
