The team at Surfside put together a handy little 1-pager outlining #cannabis sales trends from 2023 to help retailers and brands understand which summer holidays are worth investing in. Top summer holiday? Independence Day, of course. July 3rd, 2023, saw a 31% spike in sales, which is comparable to other ethnographic opportunities like the Super Bowl (42% spike on Saturday) and Halloween (27% on 10/31). This year, with Independence Day being on a Thursday, #Surfside is expecting 2 x the sales (closer to 60%). What a ride! Embarc's California State Fair activation wrapped, and I'm still buzzing. We built a dispensary/museum in the middle of the fair and saw thousands and thousands of people pass through over 17 days. What really stayed with me was the crowd's curiosity about cannabis. Attendees wandered in from art exhibits and hypnotist shows to our cannabis education area. They learned about the plant's history, its effects, and could then buy and consume on-site. We’ve never been able to take a customer on a journey like that before. We met folks who'd never considered consuming, asking wide-eyed questions about everything. And seeing older attendees get emotional about cannabis being normalized hit HARD for me. I have to say, our team knocked it out of the park despite the challenges. Stocking enough product for 17 days was trickier than we thought. And our systems got a real, high-volume, rapid fire workout. But we figured it out together, just like we always do. We showed that cannabis can fit right in at mainstream events. And, we did this in collaboration with our partners at Equity Trade Network (we had dinner in SF last night still talking about how surreal that experience was). In a way, it felt like a glimpse into the future. Alas, no time to get sentimental.... To Outside Lands we ride ✌️ Our team is onsite and ready to kick off our 4th year at this event. This is the first time Embarc is taking a more consumer facing role. We've been working up to this moment and I'm incredibly proud and excited. It's going to be a great weekend. Everyone is going to be so mad when they realize I was right about the future of the cannabis industry. Putting all your eggs in the basket of dispensaries and grows while the real money to be made over the next decade moves to hospitality. Just think about how much a bar makes on one drink with 2 oz of alcohol vs a liquor store selling the whole bottle. Not only can hospitality concepts charge more per gram, this new industry will also shape brand success. The brands that are in front of this new crowd of social consumers (that isn't yet at play!!!) will gain a brand loyalty that was previously unattainable. Just imagine someone saying: "Oh! That's the strain I had at Cirrus Social Club last week and I had the best night. I'll pick some up to try at home." Sorry to tell you cannabis industry, but the days of opening a dispensary and racing each other to the bottom as the only means of sales are over. Now everyone will have to provide a value for customers to want to participate in. You'll have to spend a little more to make it worth their while. Of course a place like Cirrus costs a little more to create. Our end goal isn't to get people in and out buying as much as possible. Our goal is to get people to spend their time with us as much as possible and spending money throughout their experience. I can see the future of cannabis in the next decade. If I’ve learned anything in my decade working with the cannabis industry, it’s that successful trade shows like CWCBExpo understand the culture and needs of the communities they serve. That’s because it’s one thing to have experience running trade shows, and a whole other to understand the industry you’re working in. Any trade show organizer needs to have their finger on the pulse of the industry they serve. You need to know the questions to ask, where to go for trends, and need to build a mental Rolodex of who’s who. This is especially true in cannabis, where trends move fast and businesses need to move even faster. Such a great event! Really valuable insights on the technologies that will drive retail efficiencies in cannabis. I believe it's so important for us as brands to understand the challenges faced at the retail level. Last nights discussion, specifically in regards to supply chain management has me thinking how the brand + retailer relationship can become more effective, and what technologies will bridge the gaps! I think back to my retail days, and irresponsible purchasing habits that likely did a disservice to my customers, brand partners, AND finance teams. Being OOS frustrates your customers, shifting them to another product disrespects the brand that likely invested $$'s to earn that customer, and over compensating for that OOS challenges your finance team. The industry has come so far, but these are still some of our biggest challenges as a brand, with very little control of our shelf space and retailer stocking habits. I'm curious to see what the technological future holds, and also wonder how PAX can assist our retail partners NOW to provide data driven insights, and relieve any operational burdens in supply chain management. Agreed. Thank you for lighting up the cannabis hospitality experience conversation Arend Richard and Sara Stewart. It directly ties into and evolves the cannabis travel and tourism innovation discussion. In the United States, direct travel spending totaled $1.2 trillion in 2022, which produced an economic footprint of $2.6 trillion throughout the county. Modern day hospitality-minded cannabis experience centers intersecting with the US travel economy is a smart strategic direction, for those with the appetite to go above and beyond a low price leader product resident transaction. Those cannabis experience outposts that decide to invest in visitor economy strategies (travel industry partnerships, tourism ecosystem marketing, etc.) and choose to establish themselves as a modern day cannabis attraction in the tourism ecosystem, will differentiate and thrive long term - if executed correctly in a data-driven way.
