We’re thrilled to announce a significant milestone here at Masabi: we were recently awarded a $97 million contract extension by New York's Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA), spanning up to 12 years. Since the 2016 launch of MTA’s eTix mobile ticketing service, Masabi’s software has become critical to railroad fare collection operations. Today, 70 percent of MNR and LIRR’s revenue is enabled by mobile ticketing. We’re delighted to be supporting the MTA in enhancing the TrainTime app and completing OMNY delivery, while continuing to create experiences that MTA riders love. MTA Chair and CEO Janno Lieber stated, "The new approach is going to give users the sense of interoperability they expect while limiting MTA's contractor risk and saving millions of dollars." The MTA's trust in us to manage the future of fare payment on the railroads is a testament to our capabilities, and we are excited to see what the next decade brings! "70 percent of MNR and LIRR’s revenue is enabled by mobile ticketing" - that's a really major channel for riders, and it shows how popular mobile can be to remove the need to go to ticket machines or carry change. (Interesting that when the MTA first ran a survey in 2015 riders predicted that only about 5% of them would use mTix, so shows that surveys cannot really show how much of a new thing you will actually use). Most people would go straight back home if they forgot their smartphone, so it may as well be the ticket that you never forget!

Congrats to the Masabi team past/present. It's great to see one's work show up in the news, especially when it's good news for friends and colleagues! I remember when Sara Poulton slacked me to come up with a way we could work with Cubic and the two-pager of solutions I prepared. At a time when OMNY was treated as a zero-sum game, I was excited to have a concept that would be technically tractable, feature-rich for riders, save time/costs for the MTA, and a way out of a difficult policy and tech problem for Cubic. While it didn't get immediate traction, I shared the document with anyone I could, hoping it would be there for when it was needed. Congrats for the various Account Managers over the years before and after me: Carla Franklin-Richards, Christopher Ciaio, Veronica Ruiz Villafuertes and Lindsay Richardson on the Masabi side and James Sharpe, Krina Thakar, and Wendy Johnston from MTA. It's a ton of work to go from a 2-pager to a plan. Congrats to the Masabi presales/product teams (David Chaplin, Nafeezah Padamsey and others), for the support you must have received from management to carry this from an individual's hobby-horse to a massive new contract and for Will Fisher and the MTA team's willingness to try new things.
