Celebrating our shared success. At the FNESC quarterly board meeting Nov 24th we paused to stand up the Ministry of Education staff who we have worked with to amend the BC School Act to better recognize First Nation rights. Those include requirements for all school boards to have local education agreements with First Nations, mandatory advisory councils based on local First Nations lands the district is on as well as First Nations school of choice. We have also provided a model local education agreement (nearly finalized) that a First Nation can request and it applies automatically. For those of us with LEAs that we are satisfied with, we can stay with existing. Major game changers that will be readily accepted by parts of the system. For the ones that struggle, we are requesting the Ministry provide support to develop the necessary understandings and relations. As these are School Act amendments we need a steady and firm compliance approach as it is not optional. We are in the process of amendments in post secondary legislation for our institutes in reserve. we are planning for the spring sitting of BC Legislature for that work.

Today Early Childhood Australia CEO, Sam Page presented a summary of ECA’s submission, For every child: Universal early childhood education and care to the Commissioners of the Productivity Commission Inquiry into Early Childhood Education and Care (PCI). Sam explained that, ‘We are committed to affordable, high quality early childhood education and care wherever children live regardless of their household income. A universal system that provides children with an entitlement and ensures the services provided are high quality, has the greatest potential to reduce inequity and provide every young child with a strong foundation for lifelong learning and wellbeing.’ ECA appreciates the opportunity to contribute to the PCI and with the ECEC sector, look forward to reading the final report later in the year. Leh Wi Lan supports Sierra Leone’s Ministry of Basic and Senior Secondary Education (MBSSE) to deliver improvements to secondary education, with a focus on schoolgirls and learners with disabilities. To mark the beginning of our programme’s second phase, we’re delighted to share this introduction to our approach and outcomes.  Leh Wi Lan’s vision is for an inclusive secondary school system in Sierra Leone, where all learners feel safe and can receive a quality education.   To achieve this, we’re taking a system strengthening approach that ensures our work supports the development of skills, capacity and performance at all levels of the secondary education system.  In action, this means collaboration and support delivered to stakeholders at national, district and school levels in the form of training, resources and policy engagement, so everyone can play their part in realising a stronger, better education system. The second phase of the Leh Wi Lan programme (2023–2028) is delivered by a consortium of national and international partners – known formally as the Sierra Leone Secondary Education Improvement Programme II (SSEIP II). There’s welcome positive intent in this plan to address teacher shortages, status of the profession, reduce workload and target resources to support improved outcomes for kids. We need more than just ‘development’ programs for school leaders though. It would be great to see some attention given to improving the business systems used to run schools without increasing the compliance burden; resourcing, building and expanding pathways and capabilities for school administrative staff; and prioritising a customer service approach from central offices to ensure kids are at the center of our collective efforts. I was extremely fortunate to experience the AIA Las Vegas EPYAF - NECTA Site Tour this past week! … Being raised in Nevada public schools, it was truly shocking to see the technological and design advances that we can expect to see in the future of Nevada education facilities. As we toured the expansive campus though, a question heavily weighed on my mind: how can we integrate these advancements into non-technical public schools? … With NECTA being a technical academy, this means students seeking to attend their program are required to navigate an enrollment process (interview or lottery) before being accepted. This leads to the selection of students that will certainly reap the unique benefits that the school has to offer, but this practice then becomes inherently exclusionary for students who, in some cases, need technical education the most. … The construction budget of many Nevada technical schools more than doubles the most expensive public high school in the valley, Rancho High School ($75 million). CCSD is the 5th largest largest school district in the country with 298,000 students; less than a fifth of CCSD’s 378 schools act as charter or technical academies. … Quality public education is an inalienable human right, and with the vast majority of CCSD students being outside of the charter and technical academy umbrella, these students are deserving of the same resources as anyone. So why are we short-changing the future of our city, nation, and world?

On behalf of several members of the NZARE - New Zealand Association for Research in Education Education Policy SIG, Tom Haig and I presented our submission to the Charter Schools Bill Select Committee yesterday. We pointed out that: * NZ schools already have some of the highest levels of choice and autonomy in the world (in terms of school governance, curriculum and assessment) and that Charter schools would do little to address the highly uneven schooling experiences and outcomes already in our schools. * The international research from countries which have introduced charter schools confirms that profit-driven companies in education lead to more unequal schooling outcomes. Sweden's free schools (Friskolor), for example, have been declared a 'system failure' after 30 years with growing evidence of dropping standards and deep dissatisfaction by parents. see https://lnkd.in/geMfztQS
