The Local Government Association (LGA) reports that implementing five-year funding schemes could result in nearly 200,000 new social homes over the next 30 years. By providing consistent funding and granting local councils the autonomy they need, we can address the housing crisis effectively. This approach would reduce administrative costs, streamline project delivery, and ensure more efficient use of resources. The many economic and social problems caused by the housing shortage are greatly amplified in rural areas. This week is #RuralHousingWeek and, together with our rural partners, Hastoe will be highlighting some of the many reasons why there needs to be a long-term #PlanForHousing. We are calling on all political parties to support our rural coalition’s Rural Housing Manifesto; a blueprint for tackling the acute shortage of affordable housing in rural England. https://lnkd.in/eCGAke52. The disparities between urban and rural housing provision are laid out in this graphic, courtesy of English Rural.

You have to question what the last government spent their time doing. In the last 72 hours, this government has done more to reform the failed planning system than the last government did in 14 years. #labour #change #housing #socialhousing

New National Housing Federation research shows: 🚨1 in 3 #SupportedHousing providers have been forced to close services in the past year🚨 The next government must urgently provide dedicated funding for #SupportedHousing, as part of a long-term #PlanForHousing to end the housing crisis.

The government has rolled out reforms making it easier for councils to acquire land for social and affordable housing. The new measures eliminate 'hope value' in particular situations where Compulsory Purchase Orders are being used, making it much easier and cheaper for councils to build new homes and transform communities. This change is set to transform the landscape of housing development and further drive regeneration in our communities across the country. #HousingReform #NationalHousingFederation #AffordableHousing

In our policy paper for James Martin Institute for Public Policy, my colleague Dr. Ehsan Noroozinejad and I (Western Sydney University) discuss the concepts of "housing affordability" and "affordable housing," and provide some policy recommendations to improve housing outcomes for low- and middle-income households. Different measures can be used to describe the housing affordability crisis, but many of them indicate that it is at its worst in B.C., where the crisis, both in terms of rental and ownership, has extended across all regions. It may be surprising, therefore, to learn that the province has long been a Canadian leader in housing policy and interventions in the housing market. No.1 in our 3-part policy brief series provides an overview of the history and current state of housing policy in B.C. Another day brings another story about the housing crisis, to couple on-going focus on the cost-of-living crisis. That’s unfortunately appropriate in winter with bare deciduous trees and a lack of bright flowers. Can micro cities solve the issue? No. This article serves as a reminder, though, that it will take a variety of (hopefully) integrated housing policies to make in-roads into improving housing affordability and addressing the huge deficit in new housing supply. As it stands, there is too much focus on boosting new housing supply under the assumption that decades long obstacles to residential building will somehow miraculously be rectified in short, shrift time. That won’t happen. Any ‘outside’ policies should be considered whether they end up making sense or not. https://lnkd.in/gW7cR2Ze

Planning is “acting as a serious break on growth” - very topical, but this is actually a 2011 quote from the Department for Communities and Local Government! My planning memory doesn’t extend back as far as 2011, but my Masters dissertation did! I wrote this a few years ago, but it's interesting that the coalition government then cited the exact same problem, but had the exact opposite solution in mind. The coalition government at the time said that the planning system didn't need reform, but abolition! They committed to removing top-down government targets, and place their focus on localism as their mechanism for promoting development. The new Labour Government have a different plan, and have announced that housing targets across the country will increase significantly. In Herefordshire the housing requirement will be going up by 78%! Which will mean big changes coming forward. If you want to know what this could mean for you, get in touch!
