Consumers can now find the brand’s 11 classic and gluten-free pastas at the retailer, including its shells and mezzi rigatoni, which are exclusive to Whole Foods through the end of this year. 🍞 Kooshy aims to revive the crouton aisle with a lineup of non-GMO, sourdough-based crispy bread bites now available at over 500 Whole Foods locations. 📊 Whole Foods Market Foods' 2022 Impact Report is out. Some folks are weary of frozen meat and companies will try to hang their hats on fresh-meat-only claims but here's the case for buying your meat frozen. Exciting stats just in from Tesco! 🙌 The supermarket giant has seen a rising demand for meat-free ingredients and whole cuts, reporting a 100% rise in fish alternatives, a 20% increase in tofu and tempeh, and similar growth in plant-based steaks and chicken breasts. The meat-free Juicy Marbles steak has been a particular success, with 100,000 sold in the lead-up to Valentine’s Day alone. 📈 A recent survey commissioned by Tesco also found that UK adults are choosing to eat more vegetables to create delicious plant-focused meals. 🥗 Almost half of the participants (46%) said they eat more vegetables than they did five years ago, and 47% have deliberately introduced more vegetables to their plates. Reasons for this shift include people’s desire to be healthier, to cut the cost of their food shop and to reduce their environmental impact. 🌱 Cate May, Plant-Based Food Buyer at Tesco, said that the plant-based food revolution is entering its "second phase" and people still want to reduce their meat intake while cooking more meals from scratch. 🍽 She added: “Customers are starting to understand the versatility of plant-based ingredients and whole cuts, and are creating a wide variety of meals such as tofu stir-fries, meat-free curries using chicken alternatives or beans and pulses, and classic steak and chips using plant-based steaks.” Do you agree that the plant-based revolution has entered a new phase? Remember five years ago when plant-based proteins were ALL THE RAGE, and #fastfood, #QSR, and restaurant chains engaged in a no-holds-barred arms race to add Beyond Meat and Impossible Foods offerings to their respective menus? I certainly do. I've been tracking this trend now for the past 24 months, and the mainstream plant-based meat movement is, in my opinion, essentially dead (or on death's door...knocking loudly). Consumers, particularly vegans and vegetarians, have made it loud and clear this #food trend is over by backing away from these products and voting with their wallets. Simply stated, they don't desire or consume plant-based meats...despite what the sales figures from industry associations indicate. As Fast Company's Kristin Toussaint details here, https://buff.ly/3UKuPdi, the latest nail in the coffin for plant-based meats is the decision by Del Taco and CARL'S JR. RESTAURANTS, LLC, both early Beyond Meat adopters in 2019, have scaled back their plant-based offerings, or no longer sell them entirely. Neither does Dunkin', and many other chains have removed them from menus as well. Of course, time will tell if Beyond Meat and Impossible Foods can recover from these setbacks. At the moment, consumer demand just isn't there.
