We are honoured to have Nature4Climate as a Supporting Organisation for the second edition of the London Climate Technology Show. Nature4Climate (N4C) is a collective effort from 20+ organisations to catalyse policy action and financial investment into nature-based solutions to climate change. Join our Consultant Holly Meese on March 23rd as she explores Low Carbon Parks at the ARPA Parks Forum! #2024AlbertaParksForum Climate change is a pertinent global issue that needs urgent and widespread attention and action. Parks are generally perceived as helping to slow the effects of climate change by removing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere through sequestration processes. However, parks also contribute to carbon emissions through operations and embodied carbon within infrastructure.It is important to understand how parks both combat and contribute to climate change. This presentation will provide a framework for measuring the carbon footprint of different park typologies. Case study examples from the City of Auckland in New Zealand will be used to illustrate how the framework applies to parks of different sizes and functions. This presentation will provide insight into how and why we should be measuring the environmental impact of parks and will inspire individuals and organizations to undertake similar research. Measuring the carbon footprint of parks helps to inform future decision making related to park design, park maintenance operations and planting schemes, to guide sustainable and low carbon outcomes.

Two weeks ago, the World Economic Forum and Oliver Wyman released a new report in their Nature-positive Transitions series, this one focused on cities. As a member of the Expert Task Force on Nature-positive Cities, it's been a genuine pleasure to work with the entire team led by Cristina Gómez Garcia-Reyes in supporting urban leaders in making our cities healthier, more prosperous places through supporting nature. As we know well from climate action, cities are a core facet of human society and our economy (making up 80% of global GDP) - and our impact on the world. It is therefore crucial that they act to protect and enhance nature. Importantly, the report emphasize the need to use the Science Based Targets Network's AR3T framework of: avoiding future impacts, reducing current impacts, regenerating and restoring ecosystems, and transforming the systems in which cites and businesses operate. This kind multi-faceted approach is absolutely crucial; too often we see congratulations around a single action - like planting trees - and ignoring the systemic shifts needed to realize the full benefits of a nature-positive urban system. That's why I am pleased that myself and the other task force members worked so hard on laying out enabling actions around governance, policy, and financing that show the need for a "whole-of-government" approach on nature in cities. We can't get the benefits of cleaner air and water, brighter more vibrant neighbourhoods, and stronger, more resilient economies through press releases alone - we hope these guidelines will support urban leaders in taking a deeper, more strategic approach to this work, and stand by to help however we can.

The #climatecrisis is the greatest challenge of our time, the effects of which we are experiencing significantly in this historic 2023, with record temperatures and natural disasters. We have the tools to develop solutions to adapt to this reality, but we need to think bigger, and more importantly, we need to act now. It was very inspiring to participate in #NewYorkClimateWeek2023, where I had the pleasure of taking part in various activities aimed at examining solutions to drive a global #NetZero future that protects biodiversity and people, primarily within the built environment. The week was packed with events, dialogues, and workshops, among which I would like to highlight the following: -TNFD: The global launch of the final recommendations of the Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosures (TNFD) at the New York Stock Exchange was a significant moment. This release is timely, as nature loss is accelerating, and the business and finance sectors have yet to effectively manage it as a strategic risk. There is still work ahead, but this step is definitely positive for all. -FiDi and Seaport Climate Resilience Plan: New York's plans to create a more climate-resilient city. It was very interesting to learn more about this project from Arcadis which aims to protect Lower Manhattan from tidal flooding and coastal storms while enhancing the public waterfront experience, adding approximately 8 acres of open space to the new shoreline. -World Climate Foundation’s World Biodiversity Summit 2023: The summit highlighted the priority of nature recovery and the need for a shared understanding and common language on biodiversity across government, finance, and science sectors for effective collaboration and decision-making. -Harnessing the positive potential of AI for urban climate action: AI is not a trend but an important ecosystem of intelligence that will bring new ideas to climate action in cities. Data prediction software can be useful for city preparedness plans and help with planning beforehand, instead of depending on emergency response. -Building to Net Zero with Mass Timber: Mass timber's application is helping decarbonize the built environment sector and design regenerative cities. It's been a stimulating week full of challenges and lessons to implement in ACCIONA’s projects, following our purpose to promote a more regenerative approach and leveling up #climateaction within the #builtenvironment.
