Retired Military Special Needs Dad || I help military special needs families by highlighting quality of life issues
Civilian providers working at on-installation military treatment facilities (MTF) are critical to providing the #militaryfamily with quality #healthcare and #mentalhealth services. Unfortunately the hiring of experienced #nurses have been paused and DoD is struggling to avoid future downgrades in salary to current nurses. https://lnkd.in/gFV_XMSE This issue only serves to highlight the shortages of medical staff both on-base and in the community, which the #military #specialneeds community has felt due to the amount of specialty care they receive. For #EFMP and SNP families enrolled in the #Autism Care Demonstration in particular, the above article really validates two aspects of healthcare that need to be adhered to: 1️⃣ Provide services at generally accepted standards of care 2️⃣ Ensure the health of the provider network Not following the second aspect results in resource gaslighting as #militaryfamilies throw their hands up in frustration at the benefits that can't be accessed because nobody is taking TRICARE. Not following the first aspect results in lower quality service or a mass exodus of providers leaving because of ethical concerns. Unfortunately, families receiving #ABA are experiencing both which results in a decrease of #readiness, #resilience, and #retention.

This is a drawing I doodled while working 5 nights a week in a Level 1 Trauma ICU, in the middle of the #covid craziness. While they tossed around terms like #healthcareheroes this is how we were actually treated and what it felt like. Fear, toxic environments, bullying, aggression, and hate were constant. I watched the very people who are supposed to heal, treat, protect, and #care for others simply let them die because they were too afraid to help anymore. Many where left on that battlefield. Nurses and doctors pulled IV pumps out of ICU rooms and didn't respond to codes. We watched people die needlessly. Sometimes we even harmed them, those of us who blindly followed the leader. We turned on each other. Difference of opinion became reason to hate. #Fear hardened our hearts. But some of us gave our lives, time, sweat, and tears to try to serve others in this senseless war. I love everything that's being done for #veterans but nurses have been veteranized without the benefits. We don't get an honorable discharge. We don't get VA benefits. Many of us, by putting ourselves in the line of fire, now experience #longcovid, #burnout , poor #mentalhealth, and many other things that impact or eliminate our ability to serve that once called us to this work in the first place. We didn't get paid time off to be sick, they took our accrued vacation time. There's nobody held responsible for resulting disabilities. Even though #hospitals made record #profits during this time, our pay and bonuses were decreased under false reports of lack of funding. Even now, travel nursing rates continue to decline, even in the face of the nursing shortage, to below pre-covid rates. What we're doing for veterans and #firstresponders is great, but #nurses are being left out of this. Even though WE were the ones at the bedside. We sat with people as they died, responded to codes, and stepped up in the best way we knew how to serve. Nurses aren't often considered first responders. We praise soldiers, law enforcement, and Emergency medical responders, as we should, but need not forget who's left to handle that aftermath. We've had veterans with #ptsd since wars began, let's speed up the acknowledgement of what nurses have done. And given that the medical community is the most resistant group to new things, perhaps a #nonprofit for nurses and #doctors to experience, first hand, the great healing tools that #psychedelics can be would speed the rate of adoption, and further #education and #research, and #stories. Anybody wanna join me for a #retreat?

The recent nursing home staffing mandates proposed by the Biden Administration has mixed reviews. There is mixed feedback regarding nursing homes staffing mandates. I thought this was an interesting new mandate which nursing homes resident advocates will welcome. It will require thousands of nursing homes hire more nurses and aides and it will give them years to accomplish this. The American Health Care Association thinks this is unreasonable and a nearly impossible task for nursing home providers, because of the ongoing worker shortage nationwide. The nursing unions welcome this new a mandate. It is agreed that it is challenging to find enough people to work in nursing homes when there is a 3-4% unemployment rate. It will be interesting to watch what happen next. For the full article, go to: https://lnkd.in/gcJznthK Hire Outcome HR is a health care recruiting agency. All eyes in Medford are on Providence as they put up metal fences ahead of our strike tomorrow. One ONA nurse, Caroline Allison, responded to the news saying, "Providence wants us to talk about the fence when we should be talking about the issues...why don't you want to increase our healthcare? Why don't you want to put safe staffing protections in our contract?" Not only are the fences in bad taste, but like Caroline points out, they are ultimately unimportant. What really matters are the issues that brought nurses to this point in their fight for a fair contract. https://ow.ly/eAcA50SkqkR Learn more about why nurses are striking and how to support at RespectOurNurses.com #RecruiteRetainRespect #SafeStaffingSavesLives #ProvStrike #WeAreONA

Union representation is linked to a significant reduction in nursing home staff turnover, according to a first-of-its-kind research letter published Friday in JAMA Network Open. Among the 17.3% of #nursinghomes that were unionized in 2021, researchers found a 3.2% relative drop in turnover. In counties where more than 75% of nursing homes were unionized, the effect was a 17.1% reduction. #skillednursing #longtermcare #unions #turnover #nursestaffing
New research ties unions to lower nursing home staff turnover. Could they be a key partner ahead of federal mandate?
