The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, in partnership with the National Institute of Building Sciences and MOD X, has published the Offsite Construction for Housing: Research Roadmap, a strategic report that presents the key knowledge gaps and research needs to overcome the barriers and challenges to offsite construction in the United States. The Offsite Roadmap was funded by HUD’s Office of Policy Development and Research (PD&R) and collaboratively developed by a Project Technical Committee (PTC) chaired by MOD X and comprised of national and international stakeholders and cross-sector experts. The roadmap provides a plan for HUD to align its programs and partnerships while concurrently offering a path for government, industry, academia, and related non-profit sectors to come together to advance offsite construction for affordable and sustainable housing. The Offsite Roadmap covers six (6) topical areas in need of coordinated research efforts with subtopics, related research questions, and key takeaways listed to help close identified knowledge gaps as follows: (1) Regulatory and Policy Framework (2) Standards and System Performance (3) Capital, Finance, and Insurance (4) Project Delivery and Contracts (5) Labor and Workforce Training and Management (6) Business Models and Economic Performance The Offsite Roadmap report is now available for download below or via the HUD PD&R website. Amazing to see all this effort come to fruition. To deliver on future needs efficiently and to maximise value return from our available resource whilst minimising climate impact, it has to be offsite / industrialised approaches. Ideally ustiling naturally renewable capital of course.

Well done MOD X! Can't wait to read this report. This will likely add some fuel to my conversation next week on the state of prefab in Canada as I suspect there will be some similar takeaways from this report.

Great to see regulatory and policy framework at the top. Addressing this gives offsite and modular the best chance of success, and allows a different freedom in design that you might not get if the offsite components are designed with today’s regulatory requirements.

Thanks and congrats to HUD, MOD X, NIBS and the entire support team for the dedicated work on the Research Roadmap. It's a great resource to help industry stakeholders think about next steps in solving challenges and gaining ground and for academia to continue to develop supporting research initiatives. Well done.
