📣 Exciting update from the UK’s Advanced Mobility Ecosystem Consortium (#AMEC)! 🚀 Last Tuesday, Connected Places Catapult held another workshop with consortium partners to explore elements, constraints, and barriers regarding the planning system and vertiport building. Here’s a glimpse into our approach: #PlanningReview: We initiated our approach by conducting comprehensive desk research on the existing English planning system, and relevant policies, regulations, and case studies related to aviation infrastructure, heliports, and airports. #DefiningVertiport: We adopted a co-design approach, engaging with various parties, through workshops, focus groups, and iterative design sessions, to commonly define what vertiports are for the UK and basic eVTOL infrastructure. #DefineAssumptions and #PlanningCases: To navigate uncertainty, we identified key assumptions related to vertiports, operational requirements, and passenger demand. These assumptions defined our planning scenarios. Our task focuses on aiding the wider air mobility ecosystem in adopting, supporting, and engaging with this new mode of transportation. To achieve this, our research addresses several key areas: #PathwaysClarity: We aim to provide stakeholders with a high-level understanding of current planning permission processes, empowering them to navigate the regulatory landscape effectively. #IdealProcessGuidance: Our work is outlining an ideal planning process, streamlining approvals for rapid vertiport implementation. #RegulatorySupport: We have engaged with regulatory authorities, emphasising the benefits of vertiports and efficient aerial connectivity. #AnalyticalInsights: By analysing steps, we are anticipating future planning needs. With robust support from all levels of the Australian government, Brisbane is poised to become a pivotal launch market for Advanced Air Mobility (AAM) and electric air taxis. This exciting development was highlighted in a recent press release. Skyportz®, a leading vertiport developer, unveiled stunning riverfront concept images for Brisbane at the annual Advanced Air Mobility Summit on the Gold Coast, held at the RACV Royal Pines Resort from June 4th. The summit showcases significant contributions from AAM companies including Wisk, Eve Air Mobility, Skyports Infrastructure and Skyportz, Textron, Airbus, and Thales. Clem Newton-Brown OAM, Founder and CEO of Skyportz, emphasized the strategic importance of utilizing natural aviation corridors like rivers for urban vertiport installations. "We believe that the lowest hanging fruit for retrofitting vertiports into urban areas are natural aviation corridors such as rivers. While there are a small number of cities around the world that have developed rooftop helipads, they are not the easiest places to safely land aircraft. There are usually better options, particularly in waterfront cities." In collaboration with Contreras Earl Architecture, and UK firms Pascall+Watson and Minmud, Skyportz has developed potential vertiport designs. Additionally, Skyportz has partnered with former Australian Scientist of the Year, Abdulghani Mohamed, to model wind and turbulence in cities and trial specific sites. In his summit presentation, Newton-Brown outlined the benefits of waterfront vertiports: - Access to scarce urban sites. - Government leases instead of purchasing expensive land. - Clear approach and departure paths over water. - Reduced risk of losing aviation corridors to future development. - Less wind turbulence compared to central business districts. - More predictable airflows. Skyportz aims to decouple aviation from traditional airports, enabling property owners to activate their sites with vertiports. In support of this vision, the Australian Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) released vertiport guidelines at the Gold Coast Summit, signaling a commitment to facilitate AAM in Australia. These guidelines notably exclude helicopters to foster community acceptance. A CASA spokesperson elaborated, "This will give the AAM industry an opportunity to demonstrate to the community that a vertiport may be more desirable than a heliport. If communities are going to accept it as an industry, then gaining this ‘social licence’ is very important. With the guidance for vertiports clearly excluding the use of helicopters, we hope that local councils and communities will be more accepting of AAM in their localities." Greetings from ATL’s E Concourse! 🛫 Pondering while chatting with my neighbor and waiting to board… How does the journey of electrification parallel the evolution of air travel? The Wright brothers made their first flight in 1903, but it wasn't until 1914 that the first scheduled commercial flight took off. It took another 36 years for air travel to truly enter the mainstream around 1950. Longer journey for EVs! First electric vehicles appeared in the 1800s (check out Chicago’s 100 year old EV charger maps) but it wasn’t until the GM EV1 launched in the 1990s that modern commercial EVs started to take shape. Then, it took until 2010 for EVs to start gaining mainstream attention. Talking to my neighbor sparked some thoughts: 1. Infrastructure Evolution: Just as aviation required new infra like airports, EVs need widespread charging networks. Towns that invested in airports thrived, becoming hubs of activity and economic growth. Could the same happen for towns investing in EV infrastructure? (What’s the impact for communities that don’t?) 2. Investment and Leadership: Massive investments in aviation infrastructure (airports everywhere! 🛫) positioned the U.S. as a global leader in air travel. Today, investments in electrification and EV infrastructure could similarly elevate America's status in the global arena. 3. Community Innovation: Unique communities, like neighborhoods built around small airstrips, emerged from aviation’s growth. Could we see neighborhoods designed around electrification and EVs? What would that look like… communal charging stations, microgrids with shared rooftop solar and battery backups, plus energy-efficiency as part of the unique architecture? This infrastructure will enable #𝙚𝙑𝙏𝙊𝙇 𝙖𝙞𝙧𝙘𝙧𝙖𝙛𝙩 to maintain, take off, land, and recharge efficiently and make urban air travel accessible to all. Many leading global infrastructure companies, such as Ferrovial and Groupe ADP, are leading the way in 𝘥𝘦𝘴𝘪𝘨𝘯𝘪𝘯𝘨, 𝘣𝘶𝘪𝘭𝘥𝘪𝘯𝘨, and 𝘰𝘱𝘦𝘳𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘵𝘪𝘱𝘰𝘳𝘵𝘴 required by #eVTOLs. Skyports Infrastructure is at the forefront of #vertiport development. They have already developed a full-scale vertiport testbed in various cities, such as Paris 🥐, Singapore 🦁, and California🏝️. In 2019, Skyports developed the 𝙬𝙤𝙧𝙡𝙙'𝙨 𝙛𝙞𝙧𝙨𝙩 𝙫𝙚𝙧𝙩𝙞𝙥𝙤𝙧𝙩 𝙥𝙧𝙤𝙩𝙤𝙩𝙮𝙥𝙚 in Singapore in collaboration with Volocopter. Vports aims to build and operate over 𝟭𝟱𝟬𝟬 vertiports across 5 continents by 𝟮𝟬𝟰𝟱. Bayards Vertiports designs, engineers, and installs vertiports based on specific aircraft models.  Volocopter, besides developing #eVTOL aircraft, is also designing and building 𝙑𝙤𝙡𝙤𝙋𝙤𝙧𝙩𝙨 to offer efficient and safe operations for their VoloCity and VoloRegion #eVTOL vehicles.
