📌 On the sidelines of the 3rd International Conference on Public Health in Africa (CPHIA 2023), Africa CDC and GIZ African Union will organise an official side event titled "Strengthening Cooperation between Africa CDC and Regional Economic Communities (RECs) towards Africa's Health Security." The side event aims to explore ways to improve cooperation and collaboration between continental and regional bodies to ensure a safer and healthier Africa. Africa CDC and the RECs have distinct comparative advantages that can be harnessed to address the high disease burden in the continent. However, cooperation across both levels is still limited, with room for significant improvement. RECs are the building blocks of the African Union and have significant responsibilities to support the advancement of continental development goals. As the health sector plays a crucial role in the policy objectives of the RECs, they share the responsibility of delivering better health outcomes with continental and national institutions. It is therefore essential to increase intra and inter-regional integration and cooperation to improve health outcomes at all levels. Africa CDC and RECs provide a significant value proposition to the achievement of the Africa Health Strategy (2016 - 2030), various regional health strategies, as well as the New Public Health Order. The side event will showcase current collaboration between Africa CDC and the RECs and propose strategies for enhancing pandemic prevention, preparedness, and response in Africa. #AfricanUnion #RECs #Cooperation #Agenda2063 #ImprovedHealthOutcomes #CPHIA2023 Details of the side event can be found here 🔻

The session on 'Funding in Digital Health' at #AHTS23 addressed pressing financial challenges and solutions in African digital health. With a projected 4.1 Billion funding gap over the next 5 years and varied investments across countries, the consensus was clear: addressing this gap necessitates increased investments from government, public and private sectors, and a coordinated approach to cost-effective digital health strategies. This session laid the groundwork for a more financially sustainable and inclusive digital health landscape in Africa. #MWC23 #Digitalhealth African Union Africa CDC Smart Africa The Commons Project Foundation Mastercard Foundation UNICEF Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH MWC Kigali Rwanda Events Group Ltd

Day 2 of the HCA Pre-AU Summit Roundtable was dedicated to the theme "Building the foundations of an informed, peaceful, and prosperous continent." Keynote addresses by Mr. Stephen Tio Kauma and Lieke van de Wiel laid the groundwork for further insights on behalf of African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank) and UNICEF respectively, setting a robust framework for our discussions. Mo Adefeso-Olateju, PhD.-Olateju then introduced the Human Capital Africa Approach, providing a strategic lens through which to address our objectives. A major highlight of the day was the appearance of Her Excellency Sahle-Work Zewde, President of Ethiopia, who underscored the importance of foundational learning for a peaceful and inclusive continent, aligning our efforts with broader societal goals. Youth engagement took center stage with strong presentations from young voices like Fafa Abukar, Ousman Touray, Raphael Denis, and more. Panel discussions, along with video and in-person presentations—including the Foundational Learning Action Tracker (FLAT) / RAPID Framework Report by UNICEF—added depth and breadth to our conversations, fostering a holistic understanding of the challenges and opportunities ahead. The day culminated in a powerful Call to Action led by Dr. Obiageli “Oby” Ezekwesili and Albert Nsengiyumva, emphasizing the imperative of collective action in addressing the FLN crisis. The Call to Action celebrated the leadership demonstrated by African countries thus far in addressing the learning crisis and urged all Heads of Government at the African Union Summit to take decisive steps towards achieving foundational learning goals. #HCAsummit4action
