As a result of the academic research and studies carried out within the framework of the doctoral study with the cooperation protocol between Gazi University Rectorate and the Ministry of National Defence General Directorate of Military Factories 5th Main Maintenance Factory Directorate, With the contributions of our research team -Prof. Dr. Elif Orhan, Prof. Dr. Halil Berberoğlu, Dr. Can Candan, Dr. Mehmet Tiken- a LIDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) device that can measure distance depending on the time of flight using a short laser pulse has been developed. We are grateful to Gazi University Rector Prof. Dr. Musa Yıldız for his support. We would like to state that with the developed device, better results have been obtained than commercial LIDARs that measure short distances (1 km) and that we can detect objects or surfaces 4 km away with this device. We can say that the prototype produced can be used in many areas, both military and civilian, and that the cost of the prototype in question is at least 4 times more economical compared to similar prototypes. It is considered that R&D studies will make significant contributions to increasing the production and competitiveness of our country in this field.

Insightful article from John Keller which features technology from 3D PLUS who use #COTS silicon (where possible) as the basis for delivering advanced high-density 3D microelectronic products that are capable of withstanding launch and #space flight environments. The article states that: "...The biggest part of today's radiation-hardened and radiation-tolerant applications involves so-called "New Space," or commercial applications for telephone service, #Internet access, and #streaming data for video and sophisticated #sensor applications. These services typically come from commercial satellite constellations composed of spacecraft typically expected to survive in space only for a short time, such as five years..." It also includes an interesting quote which outlines something analogous to a "Goldilocks strategy" for ensuring rad-hard tolerance of components: "...We need to meet the spec, but not overdo the spec," says Timothée Dargnies, chief executive officer of rad-hard supplier 3D PLUS in Buc, France. "We maintain the level of radiation that the customer needs, but we bring a lot more capability to help compete with pure COTS for space applications that last three to four years..." He goes on to say: "..."We are seeing bigger and bigger competition from the #COTS market, from New Space, to #commercial, to #military applications." Often the problem comes from a lack of available rad-tolerant parts on the market, which can force #spacecraft designers to use pure #COTS. "Because of #sensors and #processing, designers don't find pure rad-hard parts that fit their requirements, so they use commercial parts," Dargnies says. "It's getting harder and harder to compete with pure #COTS..." The Vertical Flight Society (VFS) today announces the release of the 42nd Annual Student Design Competition (SDC) Request for Proposal. The annual SDC sponsorship rotates between Airbus, Bell Flight, Boeing, Leonardo, Sikorsky and the U.S. Army DEVCOM Army Research Laboratory. Each year, the VFS competition challenges students to design a vertical takeoff and landing (VTOL) aircraft that meets specified requirements, providing a practical exercise for engineering students at colleges and universities to promote student interest in VTOL engineering and technology. This year’s sponsor is Airbus, and the request for proposals (RFP) — entitled “Pioneering Hydrogen-Electric VTOL” — is now available for download at www.vtol.org/sdc. As the sponsor, Airbus also supports a total of $12,500 in prize money.
