One of our mission statements is "build a better way", but what does that mean exactly? When broken down, it's quite simple: how can we, as architects, designers, and consumers, elevate each step of the process to receive a better outcome? We are all about changing the game and being industry leaders through implementing unique construction methods, such as historical preservation, or by finding ways to combat the housing crisis, such as affordable housing solutions. In the end, our success begins with experience. What is the 15 minute city? An ideology, a concept or a reality? A failed experiment or a blueprint for future urban design? When and how should we apply its principles today? Domenico James Baldwin in Boyer’s Design team addressed exactly these questions in a recent comment piece in ACES Terrier. Read his thoughts here, and post any thoughts of your own. #15MinuteCity #CarlosMoreno #Cities #Infrastructure #Planning #SuburbanExtensions #UrbanDesign

What’s the point of an evaluation of school buildings just after they’ve been built? The 2025 Mayfield Project brings together some of Australasia’s brightest education, design and architecture talent to explore a different major theme every two years. NoTosh has designed and facilitated it for the past 14 years for Learning Environments Australasia. In 2025, it’s the turn of participants to take a second look at “Post-Occupancy Evaluations”. Should they not really be called “Post-Design Evaluations”? And what’s the point if there’s a limit to how much a new space can be further tweaked or overhauled? Do we learn enough from one community’s space use to inform how the next school will benefit? And is that the best value way of engaging communities in designing better spaces? So many questions and about four months to answer them (and come up with more questions on top!). Great facilitation from Jeremy Weinstein, PhD and Athole McLauchlan (he/him). #architecture #design #schooldesign

Community colleges are more attractive than ever—by design and reputation, as we share in our latest #Insights article. A true labor of love, our teams design and develop strategic plans, renovation, reuse, and new building projects that honor these institutions’ standing in their communities, strengthen their ties to area universities and employers, and welcome the broadly diverse population of their students. “We are saying with our actions that, like four-year universities, #communitycolleges also deserve architecture with a big ‘A,’ because the work they are doing is very impactful indeed,” says Omar Calderon, AIA, principal at Perkins Eastman. Not all heroes wear capes; some wear hardhats! 👷♂️ Made Architecture, LLC has been partnering with us to create the vision for our MPK projects, and we're so grateful to have their expertise on these unique projects. Courtney Morrison, Founding Architect at Made Architecture, is originally from Savannah, Georgia and now lives with his wife and five-year-old daughter in Marietta. We recently chatted with him about his business and heart for these MPK projects. ____ Tell us about Made Architecture. Courtney: "In July 2021, Made Architecture was born out of the idea that every site, project and client is unique, and deserves to be thought of as such – regardless of project type, budget or scale. We particularly love working with owners (both residential and commercial) and creating things unique to who they are, what they do and how they live. Our 'Why?' is summed up in our motto: 'Thoughtfully made spaces for thoughtfully made people.'" How did you find out about Lettum Eat!? Courtney: "A friend from college introduced me to Hank, and the rest is history!" What interests you about Lettum Eat!’s mission, and what led you to get involved? Courtney: "I met Hank and instantly knew I wanted to be a part of what he was doing. Despite doing completely different work for different people, I felt like our ethics were aligned: people are valuable, and they deserve to be treated as such." 1/2

Did you know that schoolchildren spend 8-900 hours at school each year? ⌚ That’s a lot of time, so our children should have the best indoor spaces to live, play, and learn in. As Europe, including the UK, faces a surge in school construction, it’s key that our architects and educators rethink school design. Here are three key elements that can improve school environments 👇

This competition invites students currently enrolled at U.S. and Canada-based institutes to rethink tall buildings with the revolutionary potential of mass timber. The goal of the competition is to shed new light on the meaning and value of tall buildings in modern society, with a focus on multi-story, mass timber designs for affordable housing that emphasize rapid development. The only requirement: your design must be multi-storied, maximize the use and expression of mass timber, and adhere to the 2021 IBC building code. Consider incorporating prefabricated components or a volumetric modular approach to showcase the speed and efficiency of mass timber construction.
