Exciting developments are underway at the Longonjo minesite, with Pensana reporting significant progress in preparation for the main construction phase. This follows the early-stage development activities funded by a US$15 million loan from FSDEA. Highlights Include: ▶️ Completion of civil works for the camp. ▶️ Rehabilitation of the access road connecting to the Longonjo railway station. ▶️ Upgrading of a 4.5 km road linking the site to the Benguela railway, crucial for material transport during construction and later for exporting Mixed Rare Earth Carbonate. The Benguela railway line, part of the strategic Lobito corridor, positioning the corridor as a key player in Africa’s rail transport system. Last Friday was International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples, a day dedicated to honouring and advocating for the rights, cultures and contributions of Indigenous communities globally. Oftentimes, despite living on or near lands close to important natural resources, Indigenous peoples miss out on the opportunities and prosperity these afford. The UN estimates that Indigenous peoples make up less than 6% of the world’s population, but account for at least 15% of the poorest. As one of the world’s largest mining companies, we have a role to play in changing this. Our RioProjects team is often one of the first touchpoints an Indigenous community has with Rio Tinto, whether that be to negotiate access to lands or to help shape a project so it’s mutually beneficial for both parties. We take this responsibility seriously. We have learned lessons from our past and know that forming close, positive relationships with the communities that host our projects and operations is the only way we can be successful. Oriole Resources PLC (AIM:ORR) CEO Tim Livesey joined Proactive's Stephen Gunnion with an update on the company's Senala gold project in Senegal after its partner at the project AGEM Senegal Exploration, part of Managem Group, completed a six-year earn-in period. Livesey said over the six years, AGEM aimed to earn up to 70% ownership through an $8 million investment but concluded the period with a roughly 59% stake. The Senala project, described as a "legacy asset" by Livesey, is part of Oriole's portfolio despite a recent focus on Cameroon. As the partnership moves forward, Livesey said Oriole will evaluate its involvement based on forthcoming work plans and budget proposals from the joint venture, considering the substantial investments required for further development. Note that the preliminary data in the study of geological reports indicates that Vihiga County has significant deposits that cover an extensive area of over 250 square kilometers. This translates to a granite resource occupying a land size of slightly over 60,000 acres, that is, 50 trillion tonnes. While many African countries benefit from mining’s growth, there remain concerns about communities adjacent to mines facing risks to their groundwater or surface water supply and resources – casting a spotlight on mines’ water stewardship responsibilities. “Africa’s world-class copper belt, for instance, holds great potential for the future, and mining development there needs to manage its water issues carefully,” said Ismail Mahomed, partner and principal hydrogeologist at SRK Consulting. “This is vital not only for mines to comply with local regulations and global industry standards, but to protect their broader social licence to mine.” Mine dewatering is among the many facets that raise this risk, especially in regions of low rainfall like southern and northern Africa. Contamination of water resources continue to pose a potential liability and risk for any mining operation, particularly as the bar is steadily raised so that the objective of leaving a safe environment behind on mine closure is achieved. Two water reserves on Minjerribah (North Stradbroke Island) have been established for Queensland's Quandamooka people with 61,190 megalitres made available for the Traditional Owners of Minjerribah. Half has been allocated for economic use and half for environmental and cultural use.
