📣 Project Spotlight: Old Quadrangle Redevelopment | University of Melbourne The #OldQuad redevelopment at the University of Melbourne was the first in Australia to target the adaptive reuse model Passivhaus EnerPHit certification. The redevelopment required major upgrades to building services and extensive work to achieve airtightness around the building envelope. Below, Bill McKay discusses the remarkable transformation of The University of Auckland's B201 Building into one of Aotearoa New Zealand’s most sustainable developments on RNZ. Adaptive reuse and low carbon design strategies have led to the project receiving 6 Green Stars for Design and the most points awarded to any building from the NZGBC to date, categorising it as ‘world-leading’. The project’s success serves as a testament to the benefit of re-evaluating the latent value and design potential in existing buildings that may once have been deemed no longer fit for purpose. Conserving these buildings and putting them to new uses can provide a head start when futureproofing investments, making property portfolios more resilient whilst continuing to generate great returns. https://lnkd.in/gP-i8sPE

I am deeply impressed by the hospitality and enthusiasm of A/Prof. Manfredo Manfredni, Wendy Liu, PhD and Dr I-Ting Chuang of the School of Architecture and Planning, The University of Auckland for collaboration of organising the academic seminar today. Wendy Liu, PhD explained the impact of built environment features and qualities on walkability and health. Dr. I-Ting Chuang highlighted the green gap in terms of spatial inequality of accessibility to urban parks. Prof. Zhang Chunyang of the South China University of Technology shared her urban design reflectiosn based on the concept of health promotion. Mace has been awarded an £88 million contract for the extension and refurbishment of a Grade II listed teaching laboratory at the University of East Anglia (UEA). The project will modernize the historic building, providing state-of-the-art teaching and research spaces while preserving its architectural significance. Mark Reynolds, CEO of Mace, said, "We are committed to delivering a high-quality refurbishment that respects the heritage of the building and creates a modern learning environment." Professor David Richardson, Vice-Chancellor of UEA, added, "This refurbishment will preserve an important part of our heritage and provide cutting-edge facilities for education and research." Construction will begin later this year, with completion expected by 2026. The project will be phased to minimize disruption to academic activities. Our latest briefing note explains how we tackled the complex decision-making landscape for urban planning to design our interventions. System design specialists Neil Carhart and Pablo Newberry present a simplified system map of factors drawn from 123 interviews with 132 participants. 👨💼 👩💼 This work is essential for making meaningful change. Our interventions target the issue from multiple points across the system. Some are structural, some are sociocultural and others relate to capabilities, tools and information to inform decisions.
