Northstar is pleased to announce that Harvard University Housing recently held a ribbon-cutting ceremony and open house to officially open the renovated residences at 5 Sacramento Street and 13 Kirkland Place in Cambridge. Both wood-framed structures have been converted into multi-unit housing designed for Harvard graduates and affiliates and have achieved Passive House Institute US, Inc. (Phius) Certification. Harvard's commitment to sustainability is evident as both buildings are now fossil fuel free, anticipated to achieve a 40% reduction in water use and over 70% reduction in energy use. Also, the embodied carbon from building materials was cut in half while the building envelopes are 20 times tighter than a typical building. Projects certified to Phius' climate-specific, cost-optimized standard are proven to use 40-60% less energy while providing a comfortable living environment. This achievement underscores Harvard University Housing's unwavering dedication to green building practices and sustainability. A special thanks to Thornton Tomasetti and Kelly Boucher Architects for their invaluable contributions to this project. #ProjectManagement #PassiveHouse #Sustainability #PhiusCertified #HarvardUniversity
