The U.S. DOT’s Reconnecting Communities Pilot program continues to make a profound difference, with $607 million available in its final round of funding in 2024. This initiative is dedicated to reversing the legacy of infrastructure that has divided neighborhoods and communities. Funds can be directly utilized for capital construction, or outright removal of a dividing transportation facility! Notable projects include: Philadelphia: $158.9 million is being used to cap the Vine Street Expressway, paving the way for a new public park in the historic Chinatown neighborhood that bridges communities and enhances local spaces. Atlanta: Over $157.6 million will complete Phase One of the Stitch, capping Interstates 75/85 with a 4-acre park, improving local streets, and revitalizing the MARTA civic center station. These incredibly crucial efforts reflect a commitment to addressing historical injustices and building a more inclusive and connected urban environment. By focusing on restoring connectivity and fostering equitable development, the program is helping to create vibrant, cohesive communities across the country. Kudos to all involved with these transformative projects! #UrbanPlanning #CommunityRevitalization #Infrastructure #Equity

Imagine winning $20.5 million to transform your community with grant funding! A stellar example of a successful story regarding funding is Louisville, Kentucky. The city received $20.5 million from the U.S. Department of Transportation as part of the Rebuilding America Infrastructure with Sustainability and Equity (RAISE) program. The funding is directed towards two major projects: a $15.5 million implementation grant to fund the design finalization and construction of the Reimagine 9th Street Project and a $5 million planning grant to fund design work for Broadway Street. Both projects will enhance connectivity and economic development, improving efficiency and safety. The projects also include enhancing sustainability in the proposed target areas by encouraging and offering different modes of transportation. 🚨 Important Update! 🚨 Earlier this week, the Charlotte City Council approved the Compact Development provision, a key step towards addressing the need for entry-level and workforce housing. This amendment allows for higher density developments in certain areas of the city. Over the summer, they'll discuss strategies to increase townhome developments, with another text amendment expected this fall. Stay informed about the City's Alignment Rezoning process! Webinars are being held all week long. Register and participate: https://lnkd.in/enwideV3 🔥 Our take: The Compact Development option is a positive first step, addressing gaps left by the amended Conservation Development provision. The high volume of development applications under specific provisions signals a need to reassess the Unified Development Ordinance. As summer discussions continue, let's also tackle other pressing issues like trees and stormwater. #cltcc #Housing #Development #Charlotte #rebic #joinrebic #charlottenc

In the changing landscape of urban commercial business districts, managing the "flight toward quality" is key. It doesn't happen on its own. A variety of factors play a role in a CEO's and or CFO's decision to leave the city or plant a new flag of commitment to the city. Internally, achieving sustained partnership cohesiveness and mastering time and budget during the lease-up period are critical. What is of equal importance is maintaining community commitments toward M/WBE procurement and reinvestment. It is also paramount that public-private entities work together in this dynamic moment in time.

Reknitting communities that have been divided by infrastructure is not just about removing or capping a highway. To ultimately be successful, this work requires an intentional focus not just on physical infrastructure, but on social outcomes — efforts that demonstrate tangible improvements to people’s lives. This includes projects that create places and programs that connect people and neighborhoods to each other, and rebuild the critical civic infrastructure destroyed when highways were built. Check out how 3 Reimagining the Civic Commons partner cities are doing exactly that. https://lnkd.in/eHykrD_d #akron #macon #miami #civicinfrastructure #publicspace #equity U.S. Department of Transportation Shammas Malik Tonja Khabir, MPH City of Akron, Ohio Downtown Akron Partnership Ohio and Erie Canalway Coalition Macon-Bibb County Consolidated Government Macon Bibb Urban Development Authority Bike Walk Macon NewTown Macon Community Foundation of Central Georgia City of Miami The Miami Foundation Knight Foundation THE JPB FOUNDATION The Kresge Foundation William Penn Foundation
