A recent Crain's Detroit Business article describes the shared overarching aspiration to promote regional entrepreneurialism held by the University of Michigan Center for Innovation in Midtown, the Michigan Central and Newlab complex in Southwest Detroit, and Bedrock’s plan for the former Wayne County jail site. Combined with projects at the Henry Ford Health System and the cradle-to-career P-20 educational continuum on the Marygrove Conservancy campus in Northwest Detroit, that brings the number of “innovation hubs” to five. Lying at the heart of all this is the aspiration to create a more interconnected ecology of entrepreneurial energies. That prospect of interconnection is genuinely exciting. The next step – and challenge – is extending that energy into the neighborhoods.

A crowd of several hundred gathered in a fallow 14-acre field in Northwest Detroit this week as Detroit Horse Power broke ground on what will become the largest urban equestrian center in the U.S. with stables to accommodate 17 horses for use by students of the Detroit Public Schools Community District (DPSCP). The center – on the site of the former Paul Robeson/Malcolm X Academy, destroyed in a 2011 fire and purchased from DPSCP –– will serve students through classes, after-school programs and summer camps. When completed, the facility will have: • A 75-by-160 foot indoor riding arena • Outdoor spaces including a 100-by-200 foot outdoor arena and a half-mile bridle path • 7 acres of grazing paddocks • 10,000 square feet of conditioned space for classrooms, nonprofit offices and community gatherings • A high-performance building thermal envelope to reduce energy demands that will be met by renewable solar and geothermal energy production resulting in a net-zero capable building.

Andre M. Perry joined the Detroit Neighborhood Forum last week to discuss his paper on Investment without Displacement. The study examines investment and outcomes in the Livernois-McNichols neighborhood of Detroit. Perry stressed the idea that to avoid displacement, investors must invest in "people before place." "You need to invest in the people committed to the neighborhood, and that is where the investment was going in Live6." Learn more: https://lnkd.in/eHTX3AHN
