Red Duke Strategies Leads on Arctic Climate Change Readiness    Red Duke Strategies recently took part in the Alaska Defense Forum, held in Fairbanks, AK amid a rising tide of uncertainty around the issues associated with climate security in the United States.    Alaska represents a unique challenge for the Departments of Defense and Homeland Security as the region undergoes a rapid transition to a new climate state. Sea ice is melting in the Arctic Ocean, opening new shipping lanes and access to commercial resources such as oil, gas, minerals, and fisheries. My presentation titled, “Climate Change as Settler Colonial Erasure: Arctic Indigenous Peoples are the Land” asserts the Arctic as an abundant Indigenous space where Indigenous Peoples are part OF the ecosystem, not separate from it. I discuss how climate change from colonial perspectives remakes the Arctic as void of People, thus fulfilling the settler colonial agenda that seeks to eliminate and erase Indigenous Peoples from our homelands. And yet Arctic Indigenous Peoples have always and will always remain firmly in and of the Arctic. Join us for deeper discussions on the elemental relations that characterize our experiences in and with a changing climate.

The 1.5° threshold has been considered a crucial tipping point, as severe impacts like the destruction of coral reefs, loss of Arctic sea ice, and thawing of permafrost may intensify beyond it. Have we crossed that tipping point? My insights in Down To Earth.

The Arctic, Earth's northernmost region, is a climate regulator crucial for global stability. The reflexivity or the "albedo effect" of the sea ice regulates global temperatures. The 2023 Arctic Report Card highlights alarming warming trends, four times faster than the global average. Increased warming poses several risks including food insecurity. Human activities, particularly industrial emissions accelerate this crisis. Recommendations of the Paris Agreement and COP28 are important and must be implemented urgently. The West Philippine Sea is particularly vulnerable to the impacts of climate change, such as sea level rise, ocean acidification, and increased frequency and intensity of extreme weather events. China's activities, such as land reclamation and infrastructure development, can worsen these impacts by altering coastal ecosystems, reducing resilience to climate change, and increasing the vulnerability of coastal communities. China, the Philippines, and other nations need to prioritize the ecological catastrophe unfolding in the West Philippine Sea, rising above politics. While diplomatic and military efforts are ongoing, it is crucial to discuss the potential economic, social, and ecological dangers and take action to prevent further harm. Sea-temperature increases driven by climate change and the compounding influence of El Niño have bleached coral reefs around the world—including in the Americas, where coral die-off in some areas has been extensive. In April, the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and the International Coral Reef Initiative, a partnership of governments and organizations, declared a global coral-bleaching event, the fourth registered since 1998. The latest event was detected in February of last year and spread to some 62 countries. Relief may be at hand in the Pacific as the El Niño climate pattern gives way to a likely transition to cooler water temperatures of La Niña. But NOAA forecasts a continuation of the fourth event in the Caribbean and the Atlantic. Said NOAA’s Derek Manzello in a May briefing: “Nearly every single coral reef area in the Atlantic Ocean has experienced bleaching-level heat stress, and this is a new record.” Continue reading at: https://bit.ly/3xbQOSX
